Depends on what you call a fish. Among true fish (teleosts) the Pacific Sunfish (Mola Mola) is likely the biggest. 3,000 pounds or more.
However, if you include cartilaginous "fish", the whale shark pretty much tops the list. The whale shark is up to 46 feet (14 m), weighing up to 15 tons. The average size is 25 feet (7.6 m) long It is the largest fish in the world. Females are larger than males (like most sharks).
But going back in time, all the current fish are teensy when compared with Leedsichthys problematicus, which is the biggest fish known to science. At 22 meters (72 feet), it was almost twice as long as today's whale shark.
Geez, that's bigger than the biggest Carrot Clan salmon. :smile:
Now, the question is whether anyone ever caught any of these on hook and line. Hmmmmmm....
