Re: Fishing in the Portland area
Your best bet is to hire a guide in the Portland area. Everything is provided and he'll put you on fish. It's a great way to learn a new area. Good luck.

Re: Fishing in the Portland area
If you're into hiring a guide (althought a good suggestion), you could drive 90 miles west to Tillamook, and try fishing the Kilchis, Trask, or Wilson. Not too sure of the water conditions. I heard the Wilson was @ 7.9' and muddy this AM. You can check on the main page for a link to a River Height site. You can call The Guide Shop in Tillamook for local conditions, and all your tackle needs when you get down there.
A guide would be a good choice, and right now the Sturgeon fishing is pretty good in the Columbia!

Re: Fishing in the Portland area
Hi guy ..welcome to Portland. Your timing is kinda inbetween. Most of the fall chinook are done, and keeper gators are just beginning to show up locally. Any interest in boat sturgeon fishing, email me.
On the Terrwilliger side of town, you might want to check out Tryon Creek a little south toward Lake Oswego. If you know how to fly fish for steelies that is the ticket in smaller rivers this time of year.
An hour away is the "Meat Hole" on the Lewis river. Right now it is choked with fish. Most are coho, but there are also chinook and steelies. About 2/3 of the fish are getting dark, but there are about 250,000 fish stacked up there. Last night I nailed 4 coho, only one bright/red meat, and lost at least another dozen incuding one chinook I couldn't touch with 15 lb line. The limit is six fish.

Fall Chinook are not over at all in the Tillamook area, jsut and 1 1/2 hour drive from were you're staying. The steelhead are just going to be starting.

Re: Fishing in the Portland area
If I didn't have out of state family coming, I'd be glad to take ya. I know a couple "great" fishermen for the Clackamas. I"ve known them for years and have fished with both. You won't go wrong.

Re: Fishing in the Portland area
David is right - the Tillamook area still has some good fishing. If you dont know the area at all, just head for Tillamook on HWY 6 and there is plenty of Wilson river access right along the HWY. You will be able to see several holes from the HWY.
Or a guide if you want a better chance at a fish and have a few spare dollars.

Fishing in the Portland area
First to Jennie, thanks for the board. This is my first post. I am a beginning steelhead fisherman who is going to be in Portland (family reunion) for the Thanksgiving holiday. While I do love my family, I would sure like to try some of the fishing out there. My little brother (the Portland resident) is one of those knucleheaded Gorge windsurfers, but not much of a fish chaser. I have been told that the Clack and Sandy would be good trys. His house is near the Terwillger exit off I-5 (which means zip to me). Any good hints or other places to try? I don't mind driving and hour or two to get somewhere. I have drift and bobber gear, and some eggs (not real good). I have managed to catch a couple of steelies last winter out of the Salmon river here in Idaho, and a few 'nooks (what a fish!) from the South Fork last summer.
Any good sporting goods stores in the area my brother lives? I would also like to pick up some good eggs while I am out there, the fall fishing on the Salmon has been pretty good, but I've been busy chasing birds with my chessie on my time off.
If any of you can help, I'd appreciate it. 'Bout all I really know is retreiver training, so I could answer some questions there.
