Default Jig Advice

I'm gonna give out 12 first cast jig's a try and I want to order them asap  . Only problem is, I have no idea what jig's to buy. I wanted to buy 9 steelhead jigs and 3 salmon sized jigs that might work on springers. I will be fishing primarily the NF/EF lewis for steelies. I figure I'm on my own as far as colors go, but what is the determining factors in jig size, head color. For steelies should I go with the Owner 1 or 1/0 hook? Thanks in advance..

Hi Jeff,
Pink and/or white colors are proven winners for winter steelhead. I also like combinations of red, black, purple and chartreuse. A size 1/0 or 2/0 hook is a good choice for winter steelhead. I prefer using 1/4th-oz jig heads for winter steelhead so the jig can get down quickly and stay directly under the float. If you have any more questions, please drop me an e-mail and I'll help you out.

Jeff, Watch out for those big hooks on wild steelhead. The wider the gap, the more likely it is to go through the fishes eye. And fish hooked through the eye have very low survival rates when released. I don't have much experience with jigs, but for steelhead I never go bigger than a 1 with spinners and have had great luck, including some (OK a couple)pretty big winter fish. (I switched from 1/0 after hooking a wild fish through the eye)Just something to think about. Scott
