Default Rabbits and varmits with Tularemia

Anybody else find it odd that the regs don't carry a warning that rabbit hunters or varmit hunters are at risk for catching tularemia? Its rare and I was always told it was from eating undercooked rabbit. I remember there was a guy from Springfield that was always written up in Outdoor Life every few years for eating Jacks and being okay- he saisd it was because he used his crockpot until he died from Tularemia. Come to find out you're more likely to get it from the fleas jumping ship from the carcass or by having the animal blood pass through cuts in the hands. If the fishing regs warn about mercury why not let people know about tularemia?

Or how about Trychinosis/ sp?

You can sure die from that if you eat a bear or a pig or a cougar with it.

They'll both kill you just as dead.

Good point! A lot of us know better, but I just can't help to think that most people just think of their game meat as meat like they get from the store- undercook it and the only risk is maybe getting diarrhea.

I dunno, I just don't expect the guv-mint to warn me about every possible hazard to any activity. And when they do warn us, they're often quite wrong. Two years ago there were guys on this board who were so concerned about bird flu they were talking about wearing masks while dressing out their birds.

Maybe it's not prevalent in Oregon? Tularemia got it's name because the disease was researched and discovered in Tulare, California. Summer jackrabbits are mostly the ones infected. You can tell if a rabbit has Tularemia by checking the liver. If it has white spots on it the rabbit is infected.

Yes, but by time you notice the sick liver, you've gotten the jack rabbit's blood into the nicks on your hands and .... welcome to the IC Unit.

(Yes, a family member caught Tularemia in Oregon, exactly this way)
