Steak House Help!
So I am looking to make reservations for two for my husbands birthday on Wednesday. We live in Salem but make it a tradition to head up to Portland to enjoy the restaurants (primarily steak houses) as much as possible. I have been searching through old threads on ifish though and hav eheard amazing things about specifically El Gaucho, Mortons, and the Charthouse as well as some others. Here is my question.....We LOVE Ruth's Chris....I want to know which one would be your pick and why. After looking at reviews on here El Gaucho won hands down, however, after looking at much more recent reviews on city search etc....it did not rate more than an over priced steakhouse. We are very ladi back people and are looking for the best steak for our money......suggestions? HELP???!!!!!!!!
Also- please let me know how recent your experince is....reviews are kind of dated!

Re: Steak House Help!
The only one I ate at was El Gaucho's. By far the best steak I have ever eaten. For $45.00 it had better be. Service was great. We were treated like Kings and Queens. But for the price's they charge they should.

Re: Steak House Help!
I have always had a good Steak at Mortons, but that being said, I would probably still go to El Gauchos.

Re: Steak House Help!
We went to the Portland Steak and Chophouse for Valentines. The atmosphere was pretty casual and a little loud, the service was great but the rib eye, while cooked exactly as I requested, was really disappointing. Way too fatty, even for prime. The dinner cost almost $200 (with tip and a bottle of one of their least expensive wines). I can shop at Costco and have a much better dinner for a lot less money.

Re: Steak House Help!
Does Saylors old fashioned steakhouse qualify?
Ive never tried any of the other fancy joints mentioned. But have been very happy with the 3 or 4 times I ate at Saylors.
Great steak,great service.

Re: Steak House Help!
Saylor's Old Country Kitchen is the best value. Ringside, El Gaucho, Morton's, Ruth's Chris can all prepare great steaks, but you'll pay a lot just for the experience.
I go to Saylor's if I don't grill it myself.

Re: Steak House Help!
Ringside is probably the best steaks in the 20-35 range. Their prime rib is OUTSTANDING and they have the best damn happy hour in the city!! The ringside is an all around great place. Mortons and el gaucho are top notch but I'm not sure that they are 20-40 bucks a plate better.

Re: Steak House Help!
My favorite steakhouse for the money and taste is Shula's on Broadway. The ribeye is phenomenal, prices OK, and the sides are gut busters. If you have gout, don't even think about trying to down the 72oz Porterhouse. The end cut prime rib is equally good.
El Gaucho used to be the best in town but I found it has slipped a bit in the last two years. PM if you want more info.
Ruth's Chris is always good, but the butter drenching can hide flavors.
Mortons is a good honest steak without alot of extra "stuff" on it.
Ringside I have tried twice and been burned each time. Move on.
If you get across the river, don't miss the ribeye at Roots in Camas. Best price (<$30) for great taste.
