Default Transom height

The boat is a Super Vee, the motor is a 60 HP prop. Can the motor be converted to a pump and would transom height have to be changed. If another motor that is already a pump, let say a new jet, can it be installed with the current transom height. Just a boat I'm looking at, and wondering what my options are.

Thanks, Fishy

Typically you'll need a 25-27" transom for a jet in the hp range suitable for a SV. A jet can usually be converted to a prop with the addition of a 5" extension and no change to the transom. You should be able to find a riser for the transom at a dealer or manufacture. Don't forget the lose of hp when converting to a jet. I suspect that the 60hp with a jet would be too small for the boat. A 90hp power head puts out 65hp at the pump.

The boat has a saddle cut transom. Is that standard on Super Vees. It doesn't look high enough to mount a jet.

The original.

Cruise the site (FAQ) and contact them if necessary.

as stated you can get a riser for the transom. My super-v has a riser plate. Steven's marine should be able to get you one.

60 hp powerhead is going be anemic if you have any amount of boat at all. I've got a 90 powerhead, get 65 at the pump and feel like I need more power than what I've got if there are a couple people with me. Put your boat in skinny water and you'll be praying to get on step.

regards, aw

Red face Re: Transom height

Ok I think I have this figured out. If the saddle cut transom is 20" or more, then the boat could be fitted with a new jet, lets say a 90 Optimax.I see the new Free drifters come with a 90 jet and have a 20" saddle cut transom, so it should be true on a super vee. Thanks for your advice.

Have you come up with anything yet? I am looking also, I just went from a prop to a jet pump and need to raise it 5". They want way to much money for a riser, I can build one I just need plans.

Hi, Kalamanator, well I ended up buying the boat, and I'm going to leave it as is for now, with the 4 stroke 60 prop. It currently gets out of the hole and on step in no time, and I really don't want to mess trying to convert the 60 to a jet then lose the hp. My plan is to trade the 60 in for a new 90 Jet, but havent decide on 2 or 4 stroke. I see a lot of boats for sale with 45 hp or so, in the 17' range,(my boat is a 17 1/2 Super Vee) and I would say the are underpowered with more than the driver. The 2005 60 hp prop is what sold me on the boat after I took the test drive, knowing it was only a few years old and it would have plenty of power.
