How much is too much?
I have a question for everyone. How much is too much? I mean how many until you start to feel bad? My friend asked me this question and I couldn't answer her because I don't stop till there's nothing left.
The ones from this picture are the ones that died on the road and the farmer asked us to clean them up so he doesn't have to run them over with equipment.
Can't wait for spring,
D
ps. if this is too graphic for this forum please let me know, I'll remove this asap.

Re: How much is too much?
some alfalfa farmers used to pay a bounty on jacks. around the fields the population numbers are very unnaturally high some years. i would avoid contact with the dead rabbits as much as possible, they can have very nasty bugs

Re: How much is too much?
One of my soap boxes: NOTHING in nature dies of old age. Ever heard of the law of "fang and claw"? Our society has become SO removed from nature they don't understand this. Meat comes in nice little styrofoam packages. No plant life they eat was once some animals natural habitat. Milk & eggs come in a carton. I'll never forget the girl that told me she was a "vegan". I asked her how far she carried this....Her response was, Well, she did eat chicken nuggets but that isn't really meat.
My sister has a wheat farm in Pullman, WA. From what she's told me I would venture a guess that there are literally 100's of animals, (& I don't mean insects), that are kill in the harvest of her farm by the combines tractors & trucks from deer fawns, rabbits, snakes, pheasants, & other birds, etc.
Sorry, I'll climb down now

This may not be a popular opinion, however I don't see the need for killing just for the sake of killing. If there is a sound reason behind it no problem, for me I kill what I will eat.

Re: How much is too much?
I was involved in some rabbit round ups back in the eighties in Idaho. I believe in one of those times we penned 60,000. A few cottontails and snowshoe hares were released but not many. The rest were killed and buried. The first round up they tried to harvest the meat and send it to Kenya. I believe that meat all went to waste in some container in Florida. I also know that a TV camera man had his camera broke. The idiot flying the helicopter landed between the catch pen and the rabbits to drop off the reporter and the camera man. Someone smacked the camera with a bat. I guess they were upset!
There were nights during that time that we would be in an alfalfa field and shoot from one place with the ilumination of the truck lights for hours. We sometimes did not have to move the whole night. I think if I remember right it was nothing to burn up 2000 rounds of 22's. If that makes you blanch, ask the farmer that had stacks of hay that had fallen down because the rabbits had eatten the bottom hay till the stack collapsed. Shoot them all, they will come back!

I guess anyone who is worried about that wouldn't do well in the rest of the world. In Argentina every morning we went out to hunt or fish we saw pickups with rabbits stacked 2-3' higher than the bed of the truck. You see, down there they actually understand that animals are food.

We have this debate every once in a while. I want to be one of the "shoot all the varmints you can"/"bag all the predators you can" folks, but my conscience says if I shoot it I need to eat it. I think I'd have more fun if I quit listening to the good goober on my shoulder and just listened to the "go have fun and enjoy it goober" on the other shoulder.
I need some of you guys to "give me the talk" about how shooting all the rabbits and yotes is part of an overall conservation management plan.

Re: How much is too much?
Ya know all the millions of people in Europe that died during the Black Plague would have loved us rat shooters..doubt they would have asked us to eat them either.
"Ring around the rosey, pocket full of poseys...... Ashes ashes we all fall down".......... If you didn't know, that rhyme is about the bubonic plague.
Nature does get out of ballance & I for one, am not one to get sentamental about a few jack rabbits or sage rats anymore.
Unless you eat all organic food that your grew in an organic garden, please don't point fingers. Ask the Ausies about rabbits...they well, breed like rabbits.

Re: How much is too much?
This discussion comes up often and it took myself a while to to rationalize varmit hunting until I realized that all rabbits ever born will be eaten at some point in their life or death. The same holds true for deer, elk, etc.... a 2lb rabbit or a 800 lb elk is simply a meal on four legs for another species.
I have spent many nights patroling east Oregon alfalfa circles for bunnys. The cleanup by scavanger/predator species begins almost as soon as the ammo runs dry. Nature lets nothing go to waste.

Re: How much is too much?
Ahh, the great Idaho bunny bash. Wasn't here then, but it was the stuff of great stories. Highway 33 by Mud Lake would actually become a hazard due to the number of dead rabbits, and sliding off was a possibility. I've had a couple of folks tell me that if you drove that road at night you would go a little nuts, there was no way to avoid hitting rabbits, there were millions of them. It's not known if it will ever cycle back up like that, there have been major habitat changes due to wild fires in that area.

Re: How much is too much?
That photo looks to me like you are about 7/8 short of a full load.
Or if youu look at it another way you are about 200 rabbits short of being able to spell PETA in 20 foot letters.
I just hope you returned them to the killing fields because coyote's and birds of prey can always use the extra snack this time of year.

Re: How much is too much?
I think bunny boppin' with my cousins in one my best memories. We would drive around the back roads of southern Idaho at night with our 22's and a spotlight. We would kill tons of them and there was always plenty left. We did notice that the population go in yearly cycles. Some years the bunnies would be up the next year they would be down and the coyotes and owls would be up.

Just a thought, maybe there is a food bank in your area that could use at least a few of the rabbits? I'm sure there are people closer than Kenya that would appreciate the meat.

I think the phrase "nothing in nature dies of old age" should only count for prey species. There are many predators that die from just gettin too old.

If you need to ask "how much is too much" you either know what you are doing is morally wrong, or you are trying to stir the pot. I don't have a problem with killing jack rabbits, but won't post a picture of a pile of them on the internet. Just bad taste to do it the way you did IMO.

Your homes and yards must be full of spiders/mice/rats/roaches/bugs/ants etc..
Either that or do you actually eat those things also?
Take a trip some time to the fields of the farmers and ranchers that have this problem and you will see the destruction they can do in a short time.

If you farm and such then you have a sound reason. What I was saying is that I know of people that just go out and shoot a bunch of stuff for no reason then toss em all in the trash. I see no reason to do that, but to each their own if they are legal in what they are doing.
