Backing for your reel, what do you use?
Just plain old box string? What?

Re: Backing for your reel, what do you use?
I usually use 20, 25, 30 Ande backing (depending on main line test ranges to be used on that reel) with maxima ultragreen main line. I try to keep my backing at least +5 over the main.

Re: Backing for your reel, what do you use?
Well, Jen, Its nice to see SOMEONE is interested in the fly stuff still... Dacron backing is most commonly used. It can be bought in most shops, including that one on 101 in Tillamook or Kimmels.
I suppose you could always sub mono. (But dont tell anyone in my club in Hillsboro!)
Hang in there with the fly

I use TUF line. You can put on a lot, and it never degrades. Yes, it does cost more.

Re: Backing for your reel, what do you use?
30 lb dacron or micron on all reels, trout (to take up space), steelhead (because it handles better than skinny 20 lb) and salt (because the fish are strong)

Re: Backing for your reel, what do you use?
Jen, What type of reel are you refering to?
If all you want to do is make it so you don't have 300 yrds of line on a trout spinning reel. Yes, string will do the job, if it's put on tight.
You know, every time you're getting new line put on that spool, and you see them strip off all the line that has never even seen the light of day.
On the other hand, any other type of fish...
I'd rether spend the extra cash. Is NOT getting spooled by a big hog worth a few bucks?

Re: Backing for your reel, what do you use?
And also, sometimes a little bit of string is put on the bottom of older spool, Such as the older Cardinal Reels and the Quick 110,220...
Their spools are affected by ultraviolet rays, and will become very brittle. Placing a little bit of string on the spool first will act as a cushion. I had one explode on me last fall.
Yes, I lost the fish.
