4 of us limited out on gapers, cockles, and butter clams last June. At low tide, look for quarter size holes, stick your finger in, and if you feel the neck pull away, dig. They were down about 1 to 1.5 feet, some closer, some too deep. You get butter clams occaisionally. Also, go into eel grass right at water's edge, and feel around with your bare feet, or waders, and if you feel something hard, its either a clam, rock, crab (ouch), driftwood, or other stuff like shells, but we got two dozen cockles this way in just a few minutes.
Yum Yum!
Also, sprinkle some carrot stuff on the sand, and you'll limit faster.
