Found crab pot
I was crabbing saterday night when we ran across a crab pot float under water. We hook it and pulled it, it is a new pot and only one float. Their is name on the float, so if you lost a pot call 503-930-9685.
I now have a question? I couldn't leave the pot. I thought about moving it to sallow water. You know what I did. what would you do.

Re: Found crab pot
You did the right thing
You removed a possible hazard and you posted the info here to try finding the owner of a suspected lost pot
You might try googling(white pages) the guys name to see if you can find him locally

Re: Found crab pot
it might help if you told us WHERE you were crabbing. it's not mine but I think you did the right thing. either move it to a shallow area or pull it all together and make every effort to find the owner.

Re: Found crab pot
I would have pulled it. If you move it to shallow water, then there is no guarantee the guy will find and it will probably become derelict gear. I second the white pages. Are you guys required to put address on your buoys? I always put my address and phone number so if I do lose my buoy for whatever reason, they can find me.

Re: Found crab pot
I was cabbing in newport, and found it by the marine science center. Thank you for your comments. I have my name and phone number on my pots. This one only has their last name on it.

Re: Found crab pot
Yeah, I did a similar thing last fall. Tangled with a pot and line DR trolling for salmon. Was able to call the owner, meet to return the pot. It was probably a mile and a half from where he said it was dropped.
I was rewarded with fresh scones and a bottle of wine. Not that I needed a reward, but it was a nice gesture.
You may also want to make an announcement on the lost and found page, http://www.ifish.net/board/forumdisplay.php?f=39

Consider posting the last name, they may either be on the board or known by someone who is. Ya can still ask them to identify the color of buoy, rope, and type of pot to keep it being claimed by someone other than the owner.

Re: Found crab pot
I think it should be required to have a phone number on them. My number is on all of mine.

Re: Found crab pot
Does it say Trask or Moser? We lost one of each there a few weeks ago.... Not sure if the lost ones had phone number or addy, but my own floats have name(Carsner), phone number, boat registration number, and Oregon drivers license number...... Always toyed with the idea of putting stainless tags on the the pots themselves too.

Re: Found crab pot
Not mine, unfortunately. My wife forgot to make sure there was no tangles before she gave it the "heave-ho!"
Mine all say, ogrejager@ifish.
I figure that works....
