Default North Fork of Nehalem / Jim Erickson and maps

Was fortunate to make the float from the Hatchery down to Aldervale with Jim Erickson yesterday. What a great guy and what a beautiful river. I also managed to bring home 2 very nice bright steelhead for my efforts with Jim, which made the day perfect!

Jim is very accomodating to the type of fishing you want to try. In my case, I was eager to learn more about bobbler and float fishing, with a jig. I have read a lot about using this method, but had only tried it a few times in the past. I'm pretty much an old drift the eggs, type of guy. Jim was very patient with me, offering great instruction and advice. I had numerious take downs during the day, and managed to come home with 2 nice steelhead. What more could anyone want?

An added benefit are the maps he's created of the river. He sells these maps for $100 each or $75 each if you buy two. Plus, as an added bonus, he will take you for a float down the river to show you all of the holes on the river.

His maps cover from the hatchery all the way down to Aldervale. It took us about 8 hours to float/fish the whole thing. There's lots of great steelhead water and his hand drawn map of the river shows all of the holes (steelhead and salmon, bank and boat) and they are marked and rated on a scale of 1 to 10. Plus, Jim has been fishing this river for almost 40 years and his knowledge of its history is excellent.

Jim is retired and the proceeds of the map sales go to the NF Nehalem chapter of the NW Steelheaders.

The best way to get in touch with him is to call him at home at (503)368-5365. 8:00 p.m. seems to be the best time to catch him.

One thing to remember, the upper canyon goes through some wild water. There are several falls that you will go down, so waders and rain gear are a must and you supply your own fishing gear. It's a very unique experience that you won't forget.

You can send a private message to me if you have any questions.
