Yes thanks for posting this, funny how the meeting consent had such harsh thoughts of the Gov and his plan... From his take on oil drilling off the coast, and other fishing decesions he has made, I too think his mind is made up and this is only a puppet show. Someone made mention of buying him a plane ticket out of Oregon... Ill chip in.

Default Reporters Article

Though I appreciate the reporter’s efforts to cover the meeting and that it was done with no bias intended, I must point out a couple of mistakes.

First - The statement that 95% of Oregon’s territorial seas are mapped. In fact, only 5% is mapped in detail which means rocky areas sand flats etc. The detail shows where fish live, breed, lay eggs and provide rearing areas.

Second - Patty Burke to my knowledge has never said MR's are needed for sustainability.
A clarification for management of sustainability is dependant on knowing fish stock assessments, which they do not have. "The unknowns over whelm us"

Yeah, I noticed the inaccuracies too. But this wasn't one of them:

Quote:
laims that Gov. Ted Kulongoski is the "biggest liar in Oregon" and that the government has found "a solution to a problem that doesn't exist" drew the largest applause of the night. When asked what coastal communities needed in order to be adequately involved in the OPAC decision, one man suggested a plane ticket to send Ted (Kulongoski) "out of here."

As a former Research and Development scientist, I was appalled at the way the professionals presented their case or lack of. That's why I presented them with their solution to a problem that doesn't exist. They also neglected to mention why they needed an MR for study when there is nothing stopping research now....except $. About the money it will cost $90,000.00 per MR site just to do a baseline study. Without this they will not be able to determine the effectiveness of their management model. Sooooo they need just under 1 million just to start, not to manage, enforce, sample, compile, do a statistical analysis...were is the cash coming from? Major money supporting these issues .....like PEW TRUST headquartered in Philadelphia, PA. Soooo why would our government accept outside political interests and ignore the wishes of the Tax payers of this state? Marine Reserves a solution to what? Too many unanswered questions, too much Non-Oregon values involved.

Regards
Bill
