Are fishermen, kayak paddlers, birders, water skiers, canoeists and swimmers amiable enough to give up sections of the Willamette and Santiam rivers to make room for jet-boat races on Memorial Day weekend?
|
Sure enough... what's wrong with sharing 5-7 1/2 hours for two days out of the year with some folks who might enjoy something different? Sounds like a good way to spread some "brotherly love". Besides, most kids would love seeing the races. The rivers belong to all of us so let's just get along and have a good time. There's plenty of time for the other activities during the rest (363 days) of the year.

Re: Jet Boat races willamette and Santaim rivers.
Why not? We have for decades had Boatnik jet boat races on the Rogue in Grants Pass. The rivers belong to all the citizens of Oregon, not just anglers. One planned weekend for an organized event shouldn't freak us out.

Re: Jet Boat races willamette and Santaim rivers.
as stated before this thread has had plenty of input allready. It will be a much needed shot in the arm economically for oregonians up and down the willamette valley. I and many other longterm residents of the area consider it an honor to host an event of this caliber on OUR local rivers.

Makes me want to hurl! I'll make a point to scout elk those days or something. It sucks that they want to do it during peak fishing season. I guess thats when the weather and water will cooperate. Still makes me want to hurl though. Waaaaay to California for me!

There have been some form of jet boat racing on the lower Rogue River from Gold Beach to Foster Bar, for as long as I can remember, like early 1960's.
We packed up the family car and made a day of it every spring.
It really is a family event, kids just love to watch those boats race, try it, you just might like it.

Re: Jet Boat races willamette and Santaim rivers.
the issue for a number of people is they can't "go fishing the other 364 days of the year". I get to get out in my boat about 4 times a year. And memorial Day weekend is one of those times. It is a tradional fishing weekend for my family... on the Willamette around the McKenzie confluence area. So it isn't a matter of giving up one weekend out of 52 for me. It's giving up 25% of the weekends I can typically get the boat out with my family.
So keep in mind... not everyone can go fishing every day of the year. For some of us this is a LOT to ask...

Re: Jet Boat races willamette and Santaim rivers.
And to be clear, I don't have a fundenemtal problem with the races them selves... sounds like a fun time and something different to go watch... it's the timing. Holiday weekends are kind of precious to those who work 60+ hours a week, 50 weeks a year.

You first said you fished the Wheatland/Salem area on that weekend. Why did you change it?

We fish both areas. This years plan is to drift boat from Armitage to Brown Lane. If the water is to skinny we will take the big boat up to Wheatland. Since I have been fishing springers out of Whaetland it wrote that first without thinking that by brother really wants to drift the lower McKenzie this year. Same thing, since he lives out of state, our fishing weekends are far and few betweeen.
Why does it matter?

I'd love to see it happen but will be REALLY surprised if they don't find some endangered water dog or the like that will stop it.

Because the Wheatland/Salem would not be affected by the races as far as I know. Just askin'.

Re: Jet Boat races willamette and Santaim rivers.
ahh... good point. Hadn't even put that together... my point really was, for some of us, we get precious few trips a year and holiday weekends... Memorial Day in particular, are kind of hard to give up... assuming you ARE fishing affected areas!
ahem
now I'm kind of embarassed...

Re: Jet Boat races willamette and Santaim rivers.
sometimes we all sacrifice a little for the greater good. this is just being a good human being. even on super pow days on the mountain we give up complete runs for racers..they might be on my favorite run but I know that there will be another day to ride it and the racers and spectators enjoyment is worth the slight inconvenience...please send emails to the OSMB with your concerns/support. thanks
