The system administrator has set policies to prevent this action.
The more I use Vista, the more I learn to dislike it. I attempted to install a Microsoft application that I had on my old XP machine. It started the installation process, then gave me the following message:
"The system administrator has set policies to prevent this action."
OK, maybe I did something wrong. Cancel everything and start over. Same result. My thoughts at this point: : I AM the friggin administrator and I have NOT set any policies to prevent installing another stupid Microsoft product on my computer!!!
So, I fired up google. Lo and behold there is a hidden true administrator account. You won't find that in any quick start guide. Whatever happened to "it just works?" Oh yea, that's a Mac line. I'm so tempted to go Mac the next time I need a new computer.

YOU are the local administrator. Microsoft is the real administrator. You'll need to appeal to them (including the requisite sacrificial goat) to get that installed.
Good luck.

Would you care to share it? PM if needed. I hate Vista with the white hot intensity of 1000 suns.
Thanks

I hear that Linux doesn't have these problems. Google Ubuntu.

Installation of software on Ubuntu and most other distributions of linux do require that you put in a password, but at least it tells you that it needs it instead of just telling you that you can't.

Re: The system administrator has set policies to prevent this action.
I was being a little facetious. Of course Linux installs require a password. Ubuntu and Fedora at least are very good about then prompting you for said password when it's needed, so there isn't any "secret policy" that you run up against. That said, I can't say that I recommend that my 82 year old mother in law try to install it on her own.
The more I work with Linux, the more I prefer it to Windows. MSFT has done a good job of obsoleting my knowledge of their stuff with each new version of Windows, making me less likely to use it.

Well of COURSE your mother in law shouldn't install it. That's where you come in. Truthfully, the installation process is about as easy as Windows, and with more options!

I guess I'm the weird one who likes vista. A simple solution to your problem is to "right click" on the application and from the pull down menu select "run as administrator".

Re: The system administrator has set policies to prevent this action.
My friend had many issues with vista when he first got his new laptop. I told him he was a geek for getting that and should have gone with getting a Mac. Although, I am still running XP, and until it goes gunny bag on me (which it hasn't in these 2 years) then I will keep it. But once it goes, Mac is the way.
Good luck with Vista. Hope nothing else slips up!

Yup, we have one Vista machine and I'm very close to scrapping it and loading XP. Vista is the description of the view of the cliff you are going to want to throw your computer off of....

There is no Windows desktop operating system between XP and Vista. Maybe it is Microsoft Office 2007 that is being sold.

Re: The system administrator has set policies to prevent this action.
I have had my Laptop (an HP) with Vista now for 6months. I use it everyday too. Heck, I'm on it now!
I have never had any installation issues, no lock-up issues, no software conflicts.....nuth'un.
