How do you......................
remove pitch from the bottom of a boat?,
The guy who had this boat before me was going down the river when they got hung up on a rock. Instead of pushing off with the oars they started rocking the boat on top of this rock. to their suprise they popped a hole into the bottom of the boat and was taking on water. They pulled over to the bank turned the boat over and went and found a bunch of pitch from nearby trees and covered the bottom of the boat with it to get them down the rest of the river.
Now that I own the boat, I am in the process of taking off the fiberglass that is on the bottom of the boat and the pitch is in the way. it just gums up my belt sander something fierce. Any ideas?

Re: How do you......................
I'm guessing some type of petroleum based solvent would do the trick.

Re: How do you......................
i dont know if this will work on fiberglass but, i use butter to remove pitch from my skin. just get a glob of margarine or butter and rub it on my hands and the pitch comes off. might work on a boat????

Re: How do you......................
turpentine is a pine based solvent, that should work but I can't tell you what it might do to the fiberglass or resin under and around the sap.

Re: How do you......................
Thanks guys. The most pitch is around the chines and where the hole in the bottom is, well its not really a hole, it was just kindof a depression in the bottom which started to leak.

Re: How do you......................
Don't know about taking it off a boat, but we have been using kerosene to clean pitch out of pulp chests at work.

Re: How do you......................
turpentine, gasoline, acetone would be what I would try, along with mild heat.

Re: How do you......................
use acetone to clean off the dust and contaminents before you add new resin and cloth etc.
