Vehicle Registration?
While changing oil in my 17 YO son's jeep, I was looking through the glove box for the Maint. log and noticed he did not have any registation papers for the vehicle. I called the ex to ask her about it and she told me they have the registration at home and were told not to keep this document in the vehicle. She said these days when you get pulled over, cops don't ask for registration, they simply look it up on their on board computers. She said that is what has happened to her the last few times she has been pulled over. I've never heard this before! I've always assumed you better have License, registration & proof of insurance on board. Can anyone confirm this?

Re: Vehicle Registration?
Well, I am not positive, but the first time I got pulled over, I couldn't find my registration, and the officer was very understanding and looked it up on his computer. I think what your EX may be thinking of is the Title. It is definitely not a good idea to keep the title in the car. This is because, if someone broke in, all they have to do is sign the title over to them, and the vehicle would become theirs. I hope this helps. I don't think leaving your registration in your car is dangerous though.

Re: Vehicle Registration?
Titles stay in the safe, at home. We are talking plain ol' ordinary registration.

Re: Vehicle Registration?
As a veteran of many traffic stops (as the stopee) I can't recall ever being asked for my registration. Not once. And I've been driving for thirty years.
I don't remember ever being asked for proof of insurance, either. I was asked once if I had insurance, and my answer must have been good enough because he didn't ask for proof.
On the other hand, every time I've been stopped in my boat I get asked for the certificate of number.

I have recieved a ticket for it. It says that you must sign it and keep it in the vehicle. Ask Capt hook. he is a cop I believe.

Re: Vehicle Registration?
License, REGISTRATION, and proof of insurance are always in the car. The wife just received her first speeding ticket for the first time in her life a couple of months ago. Officer asked for her License, REGISTRATION, and proof of insurance. Its better to have it in the car, just makes it easier. Haven't heard anything about not needing your registration in your vehicle.

Re: Vehicle Registration?
don't ya'll remember when the ford super duty break ins were occuring mostly in the Gresham area and they were taking registrations for id theft. well the police were suggesting that you don't have the registration in the vehicle so i would guess that is where it started. no sure if it is as bright an idea as the portland police suggesting you confront drug dealers in your downtown neighborhoods but it is what they suggested.

Re: Vehicle Registration?
I was going through my wallet the other day and ran across mine. I stopped leaving it in the truck a year and a half ago as I was worried about someone breaking into my truck and taking it. It's small and flat and I'd forgotten it was in there. Not sure what you'd do if you have multiple drivers for the same vehicle though. Will photocopies pass muster?

Re: Vehicle Registration?
Let see... find truck, bust window. Open glove box remove Documents. Grab Garage Opener ( nicer the car More goodies inside). Look up address on google, watch house. owners leave. Open door.. Remove contents.
This was told to me!.
My Reg's is in my Wallet, Next to Insurance Card & My SECOND Brand New Driver lic. ( First one stolen).
I remove anything that looks easy to steal from Truck, to curb the smash & grab.
ID theft, is Just too dang expensive. Rather pay $97 ticket To Lawdog, then have to fix my Good Credit & name. Anyone had ID stolen & crushed.. could answer the Red Tape nightmare on HOW too's.
Was in North east Portland in early Evening... WOW the wild life, Scary place..when your sitting eating dinner watching your rig being Looked at by critters that keep looking over shoulders.. Good wake up call!!.
Just my thoughts. Guilty!, NO PAPERS IN TRUCK!!!..in pocket ONLY.
