Tagster, what do you mean 'Outside Troutdale'? If you are launching at Chinook landing, go up to Lady Island by the power lines. Along the shore you ( North side of the River) will see an outfall pipe. Fish just out from there where it drops off. Be careful of the current. Also the bottom is big blocks of basalt rock so you may get your anchor or rig stuck. All along that shore you will see people anchored up. Some of them are Gator fishing.

Good luck and let us know how it goes.

Pilar, I appreciate the help...Sturgeon fishing is a new gig for me and other than the holes around Astoria, I don't know where to go...I would like to go up to Dodson, but one of the guys I am taking is a puker...not much fun for anyone...so, I am guessing that the water will be calmer this far down the river..hopefully...

Thanks,

WTBarrong .... The Portland area is infested with them. Usually there is a huge sign nearby warning you about the consequences of swimming in the river after a hard rain due to the heavy concentrations of corn backed finless brown trout.

It is a pipe that dumps sewer, street runoff or in this case paper mill waste into a river or lake. After all dilution is the solution to pollution. On the back side of Lady Island are the various treatment ponds for the Camas paper mill. I think the outfall mentioned is for something called treated Black Liquor. In any case the gators congregate there.

The end of the pipe is about 100ft offshore. When the water is clear you can see the plume, it is black.

Fish on!

Try just a below the mouth of the Sandy river on the oregon side. It is very shallow or even dry for a long ways then dropps off to some deeper and faster water.
