Now...I have a really dumb question.
OK folks...This one may seem dumb, but I am going to risk the wrath of the post and give it a try...Here goes...
I am involved in the Pro Audio business. I have been thinking about mounting a simple CD/AM/FM player in my aluminum sled. Nothing high-powered...no large speakers...just a modest system to listen to some music or the occassional ball game on. Here comes the dumb part...
How do you folks mount these players to reduce the sound that will inevitably be transferred from the boat to the water? Mind you, I'm not talking stadium volumes here, but will any transient sound effect fishing? Certainly a little Aerosmith is not a natural sound to a salmon.
Jeez...I'm getting a little anal about catching fish...need more coffee.
Thanks for the replys.

Guitargary: Music on the water ? That will only mess up your concentration and you will catch less fish.
I don't believe the sound will travel that well from your boat to the water and the noise from you motor will drowned it out.

Re: Now...I have a really dumb question.
I don't think that tunes scare off the fish, and I think on occassion, I've actually gone as far to turn on the tunes to try to turn on the bite- it's "worked" a few times!

Re: Now...I have a really dumb question.
Guitguy, We have found that the fish just love ROCK-N-ROLL. We can't catch fish without the music going. We found that KGON's Rock Blocks is just what the fishing Gods have ordered.
We take a little portable water resistant radio with us and put on top of the guests tackle box. We don't have it LOUD but we can hear it even outside, buy the motor. We try not to disturb the others anchored beside us, because not everyone likes music when they fish. We find it soothes the comon beast, including the fish.
Shad like it too.
I don't know about mounting a radio in the boat, because of electrolisis and everything, but I do know that a portable radio does work.

Re: Now...I have a really dumb question.
I have a am/fm cassette/ cd mounted inside my center console of my sled. The sound DOES transfer to the water when it's loud. I checked by snorleling under the boat. But there are SO many other noises, outboards, anchor chains, depth finder "pings"....I don't think it makes much difference. I don't use mine very often....mostly to listen to a game or some "background music".
We did expirement with "types" of music and shad....SHAD LIKE LOUD GUITAR!!! Seriously, it was funny, every time my friend would turn up the radio, to annoy me, both rods would go off.

Re: Now...I have a really dumb question.
Instead of trying to isolate the sound or hide it, use it to your advantage. I'll bet Celine Dion annoys springers as much as a quikfish or a prawn spinner. Seriously though, it's something your boat will have that others won't and it can be a fish attractant. Experiment with it and you may be surprised. Maybe URBs are attracted to heavy metal (get it? wobblers, Alvins  ).

We have a CD player in our boat. Whenever we play rhe theme song from Nemo the bite increase significantly. I think any fish related music will increase the bite. The OSU Marine center did a study on this and it was proven that the Nemo theme worked best.

Re: Now...I have a really dumb question.
You should talk to Kentucky Hog Hunter about that  I fished T-bay this last fall with him on his boat and he has a cd player and speakers the size of small refrigerators. He had the music blasting nearly the whole time we were out, and we caught fish. The thing is Terry knows what music the fish like. Apparently they like Lynard Skynard and Pink Floyd. I would guess the springers are more into polka music or mabey show tunes, but only Hog Hunter knows for sure

Re: Now...I have a really dumb question.
In STZII's boat, the fish like the ROLIING STONES. We have always done great with tunes in the boat. Last Friday we fished with Gizmo man, and we didn't have the tunes going and we didn't hit a fish.

I've found that chinook like CCR. "Rolling on the River" "Bad Moon Risen" work well.
Enjoy!

Re: Now...I have a really dumb question.
I have a coleman cooler which has a built in CD Player in one side. Lunch and pop is one side, music in the other....works great. Im sure you can find them on the web somewhere.

Re: Now...I have a really dumb question.
50w x 4 Kenwood cd in my center console sled. The boat rocks!I really don't think it matters as I have had good luck rockin and rollin.People give me strange looks sometimes. It is also great to hook a fish and crank your favorite tune.My advice, install a minimum 200wt deck if you are in a open boat and the best marine speakers you can afford, and enjoy!

Re: Now...I have a really dumb question.
When I was a kid and had a subscription to Bassmasters magazine, I recall an article called "Bass with a beat" that talked about how playing the radio in your boat could actually stimulate the fish into biting. The guy that wrote the article suggested that low frequency sounds worked best, particularly country music.
A fish's lateral line makes it very sensitive to noise, pressure changes, etc. They obviously react aggressively towards rattling lures. Maybe there is something to this.

Re: Now...I have a really dumb question.
I haven't found that music has any bad effect on fish catching. In my younger days we had a big boom box going most of the time, and caught plenty of fish trolling the Willamette.
The radio I keep in my boat now is a portable one that you wind up, or it can run on solar power from the sun - no batteries needed. Works great!

Re: Now...I have a really dumb question.
I have found The Grateful Dead, Santana, Outlaws, and Charlie Daniels, among others, to be quite attractive to the fish.
Of course, these are played at levels not audible to the boat next to me.
