Default What to take for Spring Break in Mexico?

The family and I are headed to Salulita, Mexico, just north of Puerto Vallarta. My brother and I are planning on hiring a boat for one day of fishing, and I wanted to ask you experts if there is a special lure, rigging or other equipment I should make sure I take with me. One caveat is that I can’t take any fishing rods with me (this time). When my brother went there last year, they caught some small dorado, one large bonita, and several of what they called “snapper” all on live bait in open water or over a rocky bottom. Our goal is to catch enough fish to feed the families for a night or two, and have some fun doing so.

So, what do you think? Got a favorite lure, swim bait or hook I should be sure to take with me? I’d hate to get down there and discover that the best lure is one I pass regularly at Fisherman’s or Joe’s.

Thanks in advance for your ideas.

Cabelas has some great suitcase rods that fit in a carry on bag. They have a heavy-action baitcaster that can handle 20 pound line. Match it with a Daiwa SL20SH and you have a powerful outfit.

I've found that Krocodiles and swimbaits work pretty well in Baja.

Grab a couple of these. Roberts Ranger lures, made at Marthas Vineyard.
Swap the hooks and split ring for a heavier duty hook and splitring.

As far as a boat goes, look up Capt Lora or Chuy out of Punta Mita. Which is about a 10 min drive south of Sayulita.

Lita is a great spot, its a booming spot for the younger crowds, surfers mainly.

Thanks so much Salty Dogs! I'll do a little shopping before I head south and I'll report back if I have any luck.
