Newie Story
I have been a member of Ifish for about 2 years, but never started a post. I have been fishing out of Newport, Pacific City, Depoe Bay, & Salmon River since 1950.
One day in 1978 I went with a friend out of Salmon River in a 23' PC Dory. The ocean was a little sporty but not bad. All of a sudden we saw some big waves coming towards us. We hit the first one head on & it rolled over the top of us & killed our motor. The 2nd one turned us over.
We were only out maybe 1/2 mile, but the tide was taking us out. I told the guy who owned the boat that I was going to swim for shore since I had a PFD on. He didn't have a PFD on so he stayed with the boat.
After about 45 min. in the water, I didn't care if I made it or not. I washed ashore where there was a Girl Scout camp. They saw the whole thing & came down & got me & took me back to their camp. They took my temp & it wouldn't register on the thermometer. My PFD save my life that day.
They called the Coast Gurard. The Coast Guard sent a chopper from Astoria to pick up my friend. He had drifted next to a crab pot float. He pulled the rope up & cut enough of the rope to wrap around him, which helped hold him up.
I now fish out of Newport with an Arima 19' ht named Lena K. I run on channel 78 on one VHF & 16 on a hand held.
If you see me, I will always have a PFD on if I am on the ocean or on step.
Also, I will never go out of Salmon River again.
Tight lines & safe trip - when you get back in - cold beer & hot pizza.

Re: Newie Story
Yeah that look at the sad story of the crabbers in the Columbia. If they had been wearing lifehackets it might be a different story.

Thanks dog501 for a great story. I do believe I may have seen or talked with you once or twice. I recognize the name of your boat. Im here in Toledo so were kinda like neighbors.

Re: Newie Story
Haven't seen you by name in Newport but I am floating a 19 Arima Sea Ranger, the Grizzly. Maroon Stripe. Will be there soon, but am moving up to a 22 Trophy in May. The Arima will be for sale. (No icon for tears)
