Boat Fire South Beach Gas Dock 2/24
Mid-afternoon today a yellowish glass boat with fly bridge, maybe 28 feet or so, caught fire at the S Beach gas dock. Fire, police, mounted police, ambulance and CG responded promptly.
From conversations on the VHF, apparently the occupants went into the water and were subsequently transported suffering "mild hypothermia." I sincerely hope that is their only medical consequence.
There was heavy smoke for maybe 8 to 10 minutes. We did not have visual contact during the fire, as we were over by the surimi plant. The unlucky boat was clearly damaged but still afloat an hour later.
CG responded with a 42 and the RIB and eventually placed two pumps to dewater the boat. They reported that fuel in the water was minimal, and only resulted in a light sheen over a contained area. Again, this fire was at the gas dock in the NE corner of the basin,
Simultaneously with this fire the CG received a report of another sport vessel on fire at Nelscott Reef. The reporting party cited a considerable quantity of continuing heavy black smoke. CG Depoe Bay dispatched a 42 and a beach team and a helo responded from somewhere north. Fortunately this event turned out to be an error in reporting - a good faith call, but mistaken observation.
Points to the Newport / S Beach fire personnel for their timely efforts.
Kudos to the coasties for their quick responses and extra points to the radio personnel for their ability to keep the details straight on what was happening at which emergency.
