Default Yamaha T8 problem

This weekend my T8 started to act up. It has always be tough to start when cold, but after it warms up it runs great....until yesterday. It ran great for about 2 hours, then it just slowly idled down and quite. I checked the gas line, the kill switch, and everything else I could, short of taking it apart. The bulb was soft when I squezzed it and when I pumped it to get firm, gas started spilling out of the carb. Nothing happened after trying to start it for about 30 min. I tilted it up and left it. At first I thought I flooded it, but after 30 min and not even a rough idle, I thought it had to be something else.

Today the same thing happened. It started, ran for about 2 hours, then quite. Repeated the same checks and no go. Fished for another hour and ran home. At home, I tried to start it and on the first pull it fired up.

Is gas supposed to run out of the carb when pumping the ball?
I thought I had an air lock, but after checking all the lines and seeing gas go into the carb, but would not fire, I am at a loss.

Sender unit?, problem with ball on the hose? carb problem? ??????

Any help would be appriciated.

Cheers

SS

Cool Re: Yamaha T8 problem

The only way gas can run out of the carb when pumping the bulb is if your float is stuck open ...
the engine dying issue could also be your float sticking closed ...
Nontheless it seems to be a fuel issue ...
Start at the gas tank screen (if using a remote tank ) and work your way back to the motor ... It could be the fuel supply line , loose fittings , a cracked hose , bad check valve in the bulb (this can be cured sometimes by orienting the bulb arrow vertically), fuel filter under the cowling ,deposits of lacquer in the carb , or water in your fuel ...
Everything to me points to check the fuel system first ...
Good Luck ... Barney

Do you draw your fuel from a portable tank?

If so did you check to see if the breather knob on the tank was open?

Definitely you have a stuck float or a whisker of debris in your float valve if you're getting fuel running out of your carb when pumping the bulb. Drop the float bowl, remove the float and shake it to see if it has fuel inside (replace it if it does) and clean out the bowl area. Also inspect and clean the float valve and seat and replace if there are any nicks... most often it's just got a piece of debris preventing it from seating properly.

Thanks Guys

I should add that the motor is plumbed into the main tank and I have no problem with the main motor running. Also the motor has about 20 hours on it. It has not been winterized because I fish winter springs all winter. It will go in for a spring check when the time comes.

Would spraying in some carb cleaner work?

Is it easy to drop the Float Bowl? I have played around with some old motors, but frankly the new stuff scares me, with all the lines running everywhere and such

I will check out all the things mentioned.

Again thanks

I had the same problem with my T8 when new. It had something stuck in the float bowl needle seat. I cleared the issue by pumping very hard on the bulb until whatever was in the needle seat blew through. You may have to clean the float bowl and seat. I found it much easier to just remove the carb to work on it. Do not forget to change your engine oil as it is probably contaminated with fuel.
good luck

Should be a drain on the bottom of the carb. bowl. Might try and loosen/remove the drain plug and pump some fuel thru it. Could wash out your debris.

Had the same problem from new on my T8 and finally they replaced the carb and problem solved, it was strange but it finally acted up at the dealer and on a test run for them. Took 3 trips but that did solve the problem and it starts a heck of alot easier than before. I almost wanted to go back to a Honda troller.....

My thoughts on the carb cleaner are it cleans the carb really well if its in your hand and torn apart! but if its on the motor it knocks chunks in the carb then it neads fixed, been there done that. A Master mechanic Once told me If its the needle and seat try running it out of gas at a fast Idel! it may free the block and if you have a quick connect its easy to do but it takes longer then you might think. Bad thing for you is it take takes two hours too act up. Let the rest of us know what you find hope its not another carb swap that would be the second I read sbout, and I put 20 hours on mine in a weekend! for Years. Good luck and get her done before the good times come.

I had a similiar stall situation on Green Peter, including fuel out the carb after over-pumping. Never could restart the T8 while on water, but days later removed the plug, turned the engine for a few seconds, popped the plug back in and it fired right up. Have run the motor 1-2 hours since, but I'm absorbing every detail in this thread. Thanks all.

Update

Went back out today, and the motor ran just fine for about 5 hours, no misses or stalls. I added new gas to the tank and checked all the fittings, pumped the ball and it got hard right away and no gas leaked from the carb. Started, as usual, after about 6 pulls and took a bit to warm up, but after that ran great all afternoon, trolling for winter springs and halibut.

Thanks for all the input from everyone here and if it happens again, I will apply what has been recomended here.

Cheers

no they were . The motor just does not like the cold. Once warm, no problem. I will have them look at in the spring time as I am too busy fishing every chance I can get right now.
