Re: Tragedy in Hammond
I think I understand how this happens, let me know if I am off.
Fouled the OB, boat swings around with the stern upstream and water comes over the stern?
There was someone that drown up on the Clearwater in Idaho a few years back in a similar situation.

Re: Tragedy in Hammond
So sad. Similar thing happened to my friend in Tilly Bay on ebb tide. Fortunately the kicker snapped off the transom as he began to take water over the back. Lost the pot & 15hp merc. but saved his boat & life.

Re: Tragedy in Hammond
The Columbia is a VERY powerful river. Its ability to pul a boat under is staggering. I feel that the Columbia is at least as dangerous as the off shore areas we fish, partially because people don't treat it as being as dangerous. My condolences to the families and friends. I always hope that these tragedies acto to save another from the same fate. Without knowing the details, all boating tragedies are hard for all of us, no fingers or blame...they are just tragedies.

Re: Tragedy in Hammond
I worry about this happening to me every time I go out. In the early pre-dawn hours it's even more worrisome. Those crab pots are scattered just outside the mouth and very difficult to see. I sometimes have to do some creative maneuvering at the last second. I think I'm going to fasten a knife with a hooked end to a pole. That way if a rope wraps the prop then I can cut it free as quickly as possible. Just a thought.

Re: Tragedy in Hammond
Tragic for sure. No life jackets and a big river equal disaster. How terrible for the familys of these three dead gentleman. 16 foot boat IMHO is just way small for that big river. Makes me cringe. Terrible stuff.

Nothing can be said to ease the pain of losing a family member, so sad to hear of the losses for those families. Things like this help us all to remember the rules of all the previous posts.

Re: Tragedy in Hammond
Tragic, I really feel for the families and fellow fishermen. Happened to a friend of ours 13 years ago just up river from Camas. He was anchoring his boat next to an island for the night. Over ran his anchor rope and fouled the prop and swamped the boat. His 14 year old brother made it to the island but almost died of exposure by morning. Our friend got caught in the lines, was there when SAR turned the boat the next day. Conditions were good, but got the transom up river, pulled his boat under.

Re: Tragedy in Hammond
What a Tragedy ! 3 more victims added to the list of hundreds if not thousands that have perished on that stretch of water. All of us that fish this area see many vessels that should not be out there. Even on the best of conditions this stretch of water can be deadly. My best wishes to the families and relative of those lost.

Re: Tragedy in Hammond
Yes indeed a very tagic event. Take a minute and come up with a plan should such a thing ever happen to you. A few years ago a similar event happened and it got me thinking about what I would do, i'm glad I did because about two weeks after that we sucked up a rope in my jet pretty bad. We were in the jaws at Garibaldi during an outgoing tide and previous thought to the problem saved my hid. I threw the anchor and it grabbed about 10 feet from the south Jetty rocks which we were headed at as well due to a wind out of the North. At this point we started the kicker and headed into a safe location where I could fix the problem. Give it some thought, make it second nature because seconds count, I had that anchor thrown out within seconds and a few more, we'd been bounching off the rocks heading towards the ocean in a dead boat. What do you have planned???????? It deserves some serious thought.

Thanks Ken for pointing out what one might learn from this, even without knowing for sure what happened. I started carrying a serrated in case I ever needed to cut an anchor rope in such a situation after a friend died as I described above.
Since then, I have seen an anchor rope get looped around a friends hand while anchoring on his boat hogged-lined next to mine. It was pulling him off the bow and I went from my boat to his knife in hand and he freed himself just as I got to him. Have also been on a boat that got the rope wrapped around the lower unit , pulled us around backwards and the short rode in fast current started to pull us down. Wasn't my boat, or my rope, but I had my serrated knife and cut us loose. The boat owner said "I was going to try and save the anchor", I said, "bill me...."

Re: Tragedy in Hammond
These cost about $30 bucks and clip right to your life jacket. Its always there ready for use (if you wear your PFD).

Re: Tragedy in Hammond
I live in Newberg and knew all three men. Curtis was a long time childhood friend and the Nibbler brothers were a big part of our community. James was the parish priest of the Catholic church here. I feel there's alot to learn from this tragedy and I'm sure the men lost in the incident would accept any constructive comments to help stop any loss of life down the road. But we've all seen unsafe situations on the Columbia and there are risks going out there no matter what size your boat is or whether you're wearing your life vest. I 'm thankful we have this site to post our points of view and teach each other how we can safely go out on the river and enjoy many days of recreation and fun and come back home to live another day. Sadly that didn't happen here and there are families here missing their men. Funerals for all three are scheduled for Sat. at St Mary's Cathedral in NW Portland. Please continue safe boating pratices and let's all learn a lesson ... wear your life jacket!

Re: Tragedy in Hammond
I live in Newberg also and Father Jim was our priest. Our family was shaken by what happened. I went crabbing the same morning the accident happened - in fact we talked about the accident on the drive over as I read some prelim info on ifish before departing. I had no idea it was Father Jim.
We usually go to Tillamook for crab although I have crabbed in the same area the accident happened. I am going to be the example from now on - everybody wears their life vest in my boat! Period.

If you google raft supplies there is a retailer in Moscow, Idaho. That is who I shop with. I'd post a link but I want to play by the rules!
Sorry to hijack but if it keeps some one out of trouble maybe its worth it. My prayers to the families.
