Anyone use the Gulp Baits for Surf/Jetty/Offshore?
I saw the other day in Reedsport a tackle shop had some Gulp Berkley baits that were little crabs or sand fleas or sand worms......pretty spendy but I thought easier to use that bait if you need it in a hurry. But I was wondering if anyone had any exp. with them, if they work as good as 'regular' bait or ? Thought the sand flea/mole crab looking version would work good for surf perch and stay on the hook a lot better too...

I did some research in the past and it looks like you can get by with a motoroil grub in 1.5" to 2" size. It imitates sorta like a kelp worm and drives them crazy with a whirling tail. I never fished this myself but a lot of people have had success on this as a lure.

Re: Anyone use the Gulp Baits for Surf/Jetty/Offshore?
I ve only been able to catch surf perch on Sand shrimp! I've tried putting a plastic bait above the shrimp, below the shrimp, but only catch them on the sand shrimp. A friend of mine said that he goes to Store and buys the frozen bay shrimp. Throws them in the microwave and says that thawing them this way makes them tuff so they stay on the hook great. He's caught alot of perch on them too. Which store in Reedsport(just curious). You can send me a PM if you need to.

They are KILLER on surf perch, especially the camo sand worms. Don't ask me how I know this.

UPDATE: The fleas in natural color catch fish, too. Stay on the hook a long time, too. I fish two for an hour and a half and when I was done I took them off and put them back into the pouch.

I've been curious about this as well and plan to try putting some on jigs for bottom fishing this spring. You can find this stuff on Ebay too but it's still expensive.

Gulp is still spendy. How about using frozen shrimp from the grocery store? That worked for me the past, and the raw shrimp meat stays on pretty long.
I've thought about this in the past but it might work. How about a piece of pink or red yarn soaked in shrimp scent tied on a hook. Fairly cheap and inexpensive to do.

Re: Anyone use the Gulp Baits for Surf/Jetty/Offshore?
I have caught ocean salmon trolling a triangular-shaped piece cut from a one of the larger flat pieces of Gulp & attached to a hoochie. Also I have caught small fish down in Bandaras Bay in Puerto Vallarta using some of the small Gulp baits. All kinds of fish seem to like the stuff. I plan on trying it a lot more, especially the new Gulp Alive that is supposed to be even more scent laden than the regular Gulp. I may use a little Gulp along with some other bait when fishing for halibut this year, as halibut are so scent driven.
Gulp is great to carry with you because it doesn't need to be kept frozen or refrigerated. I always like to have some with me just in case I run out of fresh bait or want to try something different.

Believe it or not, dogfish don't like it. Talked with a halibut angler not too long ago that said that he dogfish were a problem until he started using Gulp. Problem no mo.

I tried it for surf perch. There weren't a lot around so it probably wasn't a good test. I will try it again.

Re: Anyone use the Gulp Baits for Surf/Jetty/Offshore?
I got a couple black bass with the 4" motor oil mullet off the jetty a couple days ago, and I've caught flounder (and a ton of sculpin) with the little mole crabs and the 2" orange sand worm things. They are pretty spendy, but they last a long time, you can definitely catch a couple fish on the same bait.
