50# should do you fine, the fish don't fight that hard but you will have to be a little more careful when you get them to the surface.

50 will work. I use 65 on one reel and 80 on the other. The rod will work but for my likes it is probably too limber. Go to the shop and hang 48oz on it with three feet of line and see what you have to do to lift it off the floor - than add a 1/2 sheet of plywood with water resistance. I use a 6' 40-60 for butts - plenty of horse power and a fast tip means I can see them nibble from 900 feet and still about pull your neighbor out of his boat when he snags you gear

50 is fine; we landed a 118 lb but on it.

The key with smaller diameter spectra (65 on down), is to always........ALWAYS.........double the line over when you tie your knot.

It also helps to use a large area on which to tie the knot, such as an oversized swivel (thicker wire loop), or a grommet.

Unless the line is badly frayed, the failure is going to be at the connection, hence the methods above.

Nice thing about 65 and 50 is you get away with using lighter leads.

Yeah, we use 65# and can put some serious pressure on them when needed. I see no reason one couldn't use 50#.
Like Mark said, it allows you to go lighter on the lead.

Also, if you fish 700 ft deep, you won't have to empty your spool just to get down, which makes it a much quicker trip up to the surface when your cranking with a spool full of line.

We've been fishing them with 40# Cabela's ripcord for years. Have lost a few - maybe we need to try doubling the line for the knot - but have caught a bunch upwards of 60#, a handfull over 100#, and one roughly 220-240#.

The skinny line sure helps in dealing with current. We use mostly 8, 12, or sometimes 16oz Big'N jigs, at 100-250 foot depths.

Last time at the ranch, the outfit rigged with 50# spectra was able to fish eight or ten ounces less lead, than the 65 or 80# outfits. No complaints.

I have been using 50# for all of my offshore fishing for years. Very rarely do I have a line break. And the lighter lead make it more fun and less work. The red Power Pro is cool, but it will fade to a white color faster than the green or yellow does. I used it for fall nooks and the line is almost white now.

It has worked fine for me. What Mark said about the knots and checking for abrasions.

50LB power pro works the best for us. The 65 and up can get hard to break if you get hung up.

Yeah, agree with the 50lb being enough. I used to use 80, and no breakoffs, but like Lucky Duck said, it's a PAIN if you snag up. Had 80lb snagged one day at 650 feet, all but couldn't break off. Stopped my 2600 mid-drift and got us crossed up with another boat on the drift while my buddy struggled to break the line. Finally busted it off and got back to fishing. Moved to 65 and 50 and like it better. Less drag when the current is ripping, and still will hang on to a big fish. Landed a 94 pound hali that went CRAZY at the surface, broke one gaff, straigtened out another, but didn't break off. Line was still in good shape and picked up a 70lb on the next drop.

65 and 50 are good

fuse your weight with a small lead of 20# mono to avoid the snagged up issues. 65# must be cleated off with the gear I fish to break it...

Last year I landed this #50 lb Halibut on a spinning rod and reel loaded with #35 lb power pro.

Was the most fun I have had. Will be using the same outfit this May on the opener.
