Default Newport Crabs

Went to Newport on Saturday to do some crabbing. 11 keepers with little effort. Only had 4 traps and spent maybe 3 and half hours at it. I’m sure we would have done better if it weren’t for the seal working our traps. Damn thing would surface near us, then go right under the boat. You could see it on the fish finder! Then we’d watch the floats and you could see it move and bob.

Sea lions wont mess with Mink or Nutria. You can buy that at the S. Beach marina store. A few years ago I did most of my crabbing in Yaquina Bay. Here's some tips to minimize the seals and sea lions.

1) Fish at night.
2) Use bait they won't eat. Like Chicken, Turkey legs, Mink, Nutria.
3) Only go to the traps to check them and do it quickly. They hear the boat and come over to get fed.
4) Carefully tie your bait so that no part is outside the cage.
5) Spread your traps out in several spots. They can't possibly get them all.

Best tip of all .... If at all possible fish in the Ocean. No seal problem there.
