Default Does white gas = unleaded?

Regarding Smily's post looking for info on a liquid fuel heater, he mentioed the possibility of white gas.

Coleman, for many years, specified white gas (about $3/gallon) for their stoves, etc.. Now their boxes state "white or unleaded gas."

Is there a difference in the fuels except for fragrance and/or color?

I mention fragrance and/or color because Natural Gas is odorless. A (required) fragrance has been added so we may smell leaks in our homes (for obvious reasons). Aviation gas is colored for identification purposes (eg. blue=100 octane, low lead).

My understanding is that coleman has 3 types of full size campstoves. I

1. The Classic or Original stove can use the fuel from the little red can (white gas) or plain kerosene fuel.

2. The Duel Fuel Stove uses fuels listed above plus Unleaded gasoline.

3. The Propane stove uses ....propane.

I would not put Unleaded gasoline in to the "classic" version.

I know that you can convert the "standard" into propane by buying a new regulator and hoses.

I have had a classic version for over 10 years and have used nothing but unleaded for the past 5-6 years. Seems to work fine. Certainley cheaper than the coleman white gas.

The difference is the generator in the lantern or stove. The newer Coleman appliances have the right generator and won't clog up if you use gasoline. I prefer the Coleman fuel because it is much safer to handle.

Regarding the subject line, white gas is super-premium unleaded gasoline; it may also have fewer additives - but I'm not sure.

If you live where there are Amoco gas stations, their super premium was the equivalent of white gas, it was something like 94 or 96 octane. Amoco was the only station offering that grade.

We used to run AMoco super-premium in mountaineering stoves which tended to be tempermental and gum-up if you ran 'dirty' fuel in them.

Higher octane gasoline also combusts slightly slower than lower octane gas.
I doubt if that matters to stoves.
