Default Fishin Buddy?

I floated the Nestucca today and seen a guy using a fishin buddy fish finder. Are these units effective in such situations? When he floated by the guy said that he marked fish in the tailout, didn't catch any of them though. I've never had a fish finder and have been looking at buying one, is there a better portable alternative for a drift boat at around that price?

I've got one and use it only to determine the depth of the water. The fishfinder capabilities don't seem too good. I've had friends mark fish only to go over the same spot and mark nothing with it. I've yet to mark fish and then catch fish in the same spot. I have however not marked fish and then caught them. You make the call. It is convenient and portable and it is a pretty accurate depth gauge.

Hi Jay,
I just won one on Ebay about 3 weeks ago. I got to try it out in the Wilson with Kilgoretrout. It did mark fish for us and I did in turn catch a 16" cutthroat with it. I also bought it mostly for the bay to set Crab traps (haven't done that yet). Also if I make it back to the columbia, I think it will come in handy there too.

When using it in Turbulent water, it gave me false readings though. The area I caught the fish was in a nice pool. I have read many posts and if you look at http://www.bottomlinefishfinders.com...interface_.htm it might help. I looked long and hard and felt I got a good deal on mine. I am happy with it. It came with the original box and looked brand new but no manual. I called bottomline and 3 days later I got a manual free, just for the asking. I got hte fishinbuddy 1200. It also has a pretty accurate temperature reading too.

I thought it was the best way to go because in a drift boat you may encounter shallow drifts and you can easily pull it out of it's holder while going thru the Shallow difts. I have had to walk my boat 2 or 3 times that day. The other ones like the eagle or humming bird ones have a suction cup I think would get knocked off in shallow drifts and can't easily protect it.
Good luck with which way you decide to go.

Fished the Nestucca Sunday from farmers to three rivers and only seen a couple of fish hooked and zero landed. I did hear of a couple more caught though. Water level was at 3.8 and dropping which made for a rocky ride. There were fish in the river though.
