Wiggle Warts
I bought a few wiggle warts to use. Some of them needed to be tuned ,some didnt. I tried to tune them, but was having a hard time getting them to work right>>Please help me out here with a few tips, to make it easier to tune them.

Re: Wiggle Warts
First off, make sure all eyes are straight. Then tie on the lure (always using a snap) and run the lure through the water at high speed --- like rip it --- and note if it runs perfectly straight. If not, just slightly, almost imperceptibly, bend the lure attachment eye in the direction that you want the lure to go to straighten out --- e.g., if it is diving right, then slightly bend the eye left. You are bending the eye over from the top to one side or the other. Rip it through the water again, and continue until it runs straight.
Another subject altogether is re-rigging your hooks. That has been discussed quite often here and on PP. You might search for that from prior posts. A Wiggle Wart will perform far better if the hooks are re-rigged --- my log shows 83 straight steelhead landed (back when guiding) once they had been well-hooked, after re-rigging them. You just can't do that with the factory hooks.
Come to the tackle swap next Saturday and someone will show you all this.

Re: Wiggle Warts
FISHRUS,
If you are using the older Warts with a slit ring where you tie it on, Get rid of the split ring and use the kind of snap that is in Hot Shots.
To tune the the plug you will need a pair of needle nosed pliers. If the plug dives off to on side, bend the eye that you attch the snap to the oppisite way the plugs wants to run. Warts are some of the hardest plugs to tune, just keep trying until you get it. If you never get it to run right, pull the hooks off and use it as a keychain. Some plugs will never tune up.
The best way to rig hooks on a wart is to remove the trebles and the splt ring on the tail eye. Add a 4 bead bead chain to the belly eye. To thebead chain add a quality 1/0 open eye Siwash hook. Make sure you completly close the eye on the hook. The Siwash hlds fish better than the trebles. The bead chain helps hook short striking fish.

FISHRUS,
Where and when is the swap meet? I saw that it's going to be held at the Riverside Park, but I don't know where that is. Can you enlighten me?

Re: Wiggle Warts
FISHRUs...All good reccommendations in the above posts...I think the only thing I would ad...is remember when tuning...only a VERY minute adjustment is needed. I'll show you Sat. if you can wait that long...

Re: Wiggle Warts
doubletake,
Its a matter of personal opinion on whether a reble or a single siwash is better. I personally use siwash hooks on all my plugs. I have more confidnece in them. I seem to land more fish when using the siwash hooks. I run siwash on all my Warts, Hotshots and Tadpollys. Single hooks make it easier to release fish also.

Re: Wiggle Warts
What is a siwash hook anyways? I use wiggle warts all the time and take the time to "tune" them in but the mention of changing the hooks has me intrested.

Re: Wiggle Warts
My earlier experience with 83 straight landed steelhead was using a VMC #9349 treble in size 2, run on the belly eye using a split ring, a #7 swivel, then an extended Luhr Jenson split ring, then the hook. That moves the hook back behind the body of the lure and prevents the fish from using the hooks or the hook and lure body as leverage. Works great.

Re: Wiggle Warts
Willie, great info. I am curious if you think the single siwash is better than a single treble. I change from factory to a single Gamie #4 treble on the tail and have had awesome luck with it. I do have warts set up both with the bead chain from the belly and also double split ring on the tail both with a single siwash for the Snoqualmie. Swapping hooks around is relatively new to me any advice would be awesome. Thanks for the input.
I have had warts that would almost not tune, the key was very minute adjustments until it was right. Try to keep your patience, haven't had one yet that I couldn't get to run straight. Don't go easy on the plug, the faster you pull it the better tuned it will be. You can have one tuned in slow water and get into some current and it will head for the beach or tangle the other lines out (quite embarassing). Good luck all.
