Default Smelt report needed.

Need some info on smelt dipping. I am interested in the rivers near Portland generally and the Sandy in particular. Any tips you can give me on technique, time of day, etc. would be greatly appreciated.
I hear that they are in the Cowlitz but when are they likly to hit the Sandy and how long will they stick around?

Have'nt shown at the sandy yet, and they may not.
Too early to tell.
Went to the Cow last night for a small handful.
Enough to fish and smoke.
I would go there if you are eager, then keep posted here for the big push.
Check with Bobs sporting goods in Longview for the latest.

tried to post a report last night but comp. froze up and couldn't get into windows until this a.m.

Started at 7pm at carnival market(Hwy 4)..30 dippers getting nothing..I shined my maglight into the water for 2 guys about 8 feet out and they were getting 3 each every couple minutes, dipping the lighted area..very poor results reported by everyone.

7:30pm Headed down river to the steel bridge in
kelso Another 30 dippers getting 1 or 2 every 5 to 8 dips..again very poor dipping reported by most I talked too.

Headed to gearhart Gardens park/boatlaunch longview..not a sole dipping the launch and there was a seal 20 feet out from launch feeding heavily. Did see a jetboat in middle of river current doing very well with 3 guys in it.

the river level has dropped some 5 feet in height from last weekend and dipping is very spotty for bank dipping.
will try again this eve if no one posts a report.

Went to the cowlitz this morning, noone doing much. Stopped at Gearhart and watched a Thunderjet being pulled off a sandbar. Sheriff said he had been there all night. No smelt for me though.
