Question Eastern OR Spring Bear

I'm curious what time of year you've had the best success for Eastern OR bears...mid-April, late April, beginning of May, late May??? I know it changes some from year to year due to snow melt, weather, etc., but what time of year have you found to be best?

It just depends on the snow..A little secret follow the elk herds and you will find the bears....Or find the wild onion fields....Good luck to you....

They are mostly on the North side of the Wenaha river (south facing -sun). Chesnim is a different story, however...lots of onions.

May 17 has been my magic day for several years.

Every spring bear I have taken had a mouth full of onions (just as has been said). For me, getting a bear has always depended on the snow level. I've drawn several tags, and twice in the past 15 years I couldn't hunt at all because I couldn't get to the area. Its that deep drift, open road time when niether a snow machine, truck or an ATV can manage the entire distance.

We've had our best luck looking for biscuit root. Usually found on an open ridge spine.

Find Biscuit root or wild onion...they also love the big yellow sunflowers.

About mid-may is primetime...on average...depends on the spring though.
