Default Couple more bow questions...

Now that i got the bow...i need some tips on the other things...its a 30" draw right handed.

what kind of arrows? how long should they be? i plan on target shooting only for now.

Any advice on what kind of sight and release i should get? I'm not looking to spend a ton of money on either but i do want a sight that is easy to adjust to as a once-again beginner.

I've used releases before so i think i know how those work but i have no idea what kind/brand to get. I was looking at the little ropes that go on the string called a knock i think it was, are those any good?

Once again thank you for all of the advice much appreciated!

I just went through the process of matching arrows to a new bow. I got a lot of help from the guys here on ifish, but the best advice I can give you is to go to an archery shop and see what they think. They are pretty good at matching your arrows to your bow specifications and you'll have confidence that your getting the best accuracy out of your setup. As far as sights and releases I haven't tried enough of them to offer an experienced opinion, but I know other guys on here have their favorites.

BTW the little string thing is called a knocking loop. I like mine so far, but still had good accuracy without it.

well first off what is your draw length? Is it 30" or 29" just cause the bow is a 30" draw dosn't mean thats right for you. You may have to just go to a pro shop and have it fitted to ya. and they will hook ya up with the arrows and they will be the right spline and length. then after ya know what you need and have some time behind the bow you can order stuff from cabelas and the like.

If you decide to use a string loop make sure the guys at the pro shop adjust your draw length to having one on. They also will help find an arrow that will fit your set up. Cobra sights are decent sights that are easily adjustable and won't break the bank.

#1 most important rule.........the bow has to fit you,if not you will never shoot it well, once it fits, then you will be able to determine arrow length and spine,as far as accessories, ther are too many to list here, stay with decent quality, lots of sights in the $30-50 range, same goes for the release, don't buy a $9.99 from wally world, look at truball or other quality, there are as many accessories for archery as there are for any sport,in the beginning keep it simple, yet fuctional,as you progress then you can step up,most all archers started out with inexpensive or used gear then graduated to the top of the line stuff, not hard to invest over a $1000.00 in a setup, just make sure you like the sport and get some good guidance along the way and you'll be doomed like the rest of us.............welcome to the addiction

Wellll..... You don't actually need a release or sights. Why don't you learn to shoot instinctively? All that "other stuff" is there to malfunction at just the right time and cost you an animal. I've tried all that fancy stuff but could always shoot better over unmeasured distances (actual hunting conditions) without that crap. Most everyone else can too if they'd just try.

the best thing you can do is go to your local bow shop. i'm not sure where you live but if you are close enough to medford go to doclaw archery, they are the best in southern oregon.

Awesome...lots of great advice again guys thank you! I'll be taking the bow down to see that it is fitted properly and pick up some arrows. Then im off to the in door range.

Best thing i think to do is just get in some time behind the bow once it's ready that way i can adjust it to what im doing and want it to do.

Im already having the late night visions of elaborate deer and various animal targets set up in the backyard

MOST guys are not willing to invest that kind of time to be proficient at it though. I shoot fingers with sights so I am about as light armored as they come....most guys have a hard time dong that even

Scott makes reliable and accurate releases. They aren't the cheapest though.
I've tried a variety of sight systems (Cobra, PSE, Trophy Ridge) on my compounds over the years. They all work fine, but all were kind of annoying to adjust when I'd switch arrow weight for elk or deer or sight in broadheads. Recently, a fellow archer recommended a Sonoran Bowhunting sight. I love it.
They do not do a lot of marketing, but Sonoran Sights are the toughest made and easiest to adjust that I have ever found. Check 'em out:

AMA Archery in Klamath Falls is a real good place to start. They'll get you set up and have a range with DART. My favorite release is the Carter Quickie, which is a real nice hook design without the rod, it's perfect for hunting in my book. My favorite site is Spot Hogg's Real Deal. I've broken some of the other brands, and also found them to not be as bright or as well adjusting. neither are cheap, but they'll serve you well for a long time. I wouldn't bother spending a lot on the highest quality arrows now, maybe some time in the future.

Consider this. The release is no different than a rifle. You will attain the best accuracy with a good release.

I use a Tru ball "Short and sweet". I dont know if there are others like it but it has a hook for attaching to the string loop. Instead of jaws. It is easy on and off the loop without having to look at it. So you watch the target and not watch the release.

Not saying you have to buy it. Just look around before you buy. And get a good release.

I have been hunting with the same release for years and you can get them for as little as 5.00 It is called a crackshot and it will work on any bow up to 100+ lbs, I know, jr sliverslinger used to have a bow that was over 100lbs and it work on that one. It is the simpliest release there is and it is convient. I just carry mine in my pocket until needed.

Look at the Winn free flight release. I have used the same one now for 17 years and I converted mine to be able to use on a string loop last year. I would not trade this thing for any release out there and they run about $70.00 bucks see at www.winnarchery.com I use the c10 and converted it to just like the one they sell for loops.

i use a fecth hunter release. with most new bows yuo have to use a release due to the angle of the string. i use a flash piont 6 pin sight when you sight in your first pin it sights in all you pins. it comes from the factory for 10 yard adjustments. it also has a light dampaner so it doen't over light the pins, and it gathers light longer for lower light(early morning and late evnening) i aslo use a trophy taker fall away rest. shoot the same arrows for deer and elk the same broadhead ( muzzy 125 gr). the nice thing about the muzzy's are that i can take out the razors and put in practice blades that are made for target shooting, so i shoot the same all the time so that i don't have to change anything on my bow. i haven't shot since last season, but i can grab my bow and go shoot right know.hope this helps
