Default GPS coordinates for Bottomfishing

I know the big rocks just north and south of the Tillamook jetty's but I'm looking for holes that are a little farther out. I was fishing at the rocks south of the jetty's and noticed that there was a couple boats a few miles out to the southwest. I went out there and immediatly got into fish but thats before I had GPS so I couldn't mark it. If anybody has some holes they'd like to share I'd appriciate hearing about them. Thanks

I think you're looking for the craiglist "Casual Encounters" forum.

I for one, will not be posting locations of bottom fish hot spots, on this or any other board, until there is no longer a threat of some Eco spy using them to establish a marine reserve where I want to fish.

We are naive if we don't think the marine reserve proponents have not already signed up here posing as friendly fishermen.

There I've said it! I know you were thinking it! So now a once eager to help gathering, has to be careful of who they help.

There's an easy solution to this guys. Share numbers in person. I have made it a policy that if someone wants numbers to someplace, all they have to do is stop by the boat and I'll wrote some down for them.

The other easy solution, especially for bottomfishing is to learn to read navigational and bathymetric charts. Reef systems hold fish and are not difficult to find.

No kidding Mike..... it's simply amazing how easy the spots jump right out at you from a paper chart. Just look down where it says "rky".....and where the lines get squiggly.... Oh but I forgot....paper charts are "old fashioned."

It's really easy. Ask the newbie to attend one of the TA meetings, or any casual meeting of dogs; get to know each other. That's the way it was before the internet.

Extra credit for arranging to see his boat.

More extra credit if dried fish blood / scales can be seen stuck to the boat.

Mypursuit, I think you are slightly missing the point here. A big part of this board has always been to teach people how to more successfully catch fish. Meeting people one on one, discussing where fish are located, giving a few numbers out, and hopefully teaching someone how to locate fish on their own is in fact the very best information sharing there is.

Simply posting GPS numbers or PM'ing GPS numbers in the short term will certainly get someone to a spot, but that has NEVER been what the SD board is about. Sure, certain areas like the Chicken Ranch, and unfortunately some others are easily passed around. But nearshore bottomfishing areas are numerous and easily identifiable by a number of means that make you a better fisherman and a more informed angler.

Easy way or the right way?

I am not familiar with the Garibaldi area where the original poster was asking for #s but as a few have said. Take a look at the actual charts or the ones in your plotter and look for the structure. There are a few prominent ones S of Newport (Johnson Rock, N Pinnacle, South Reef) and you will see the bulk of the boats there or ones who follow the charters. You will also see some of these guys back at the docks and hear of the tough fishing and crowding. More often than not I have filled the cooler within sight of the flotilla. I do have a little local knowledge but most of it I picked up from doing a little exploring. Most important of all I used my FF to find structure and schools of fish. I do have spots on the GPS but I use them more for reference than concrete areas to stop and fish. The fish move and I have been as much as .5 miles off these marks before I found the fish and there have been times they are not biting or not there. Most of the areas I have found have been by cruising around, seeing a good area on the FF and dropping down on likely spots or schools of fish. There is no shortage of fish or spots to try out of Newport and it is really satisfying and easy to find your own spot.

What Walter said above is an excellent point. I have hundreds of waypopints on my GPS. Sometimes fish are right on them, sometimes they have moved a ways off. I use charts and numbers as a starting point and then the fish finder from there. Each season is different.

Yep! This is how most good fishing spots were found waaay before GPS was available.

I look forward to meeting some of you in person. I have gained a bunch of info wealth from guys on this board about this subject, but most of my knowledge comes from paying attention when reading info and being observant when on the water.

Pick your days and get out and try it. I have been out of Newport once a month for the last three and have put limits in the boat. SOme of the spots were shown to me by Salty's and some I've found on my own.

It's a great fishery and I know I still have many years of learning. Good luck and tight lines.

Bottom fishing is always a touchy subject (for numbers) but I found that, for the most part, I stopped even putting plots into my GPS as I really didn't need or use them much. General areas are good to know for ports I have not fished begore (my first time out of Garibaldi I asked north or south and got told south of the arches) to start me out. This info can change and is helpful but charts and fishfinders are usually better for dialing the fish in, rather than using old coordinates. Half the fun of bottom fishing is the search. Experience is better for knowing how to set up on drifts so you don't have to set up as often, rather than for finding the exact spot to fish. Good luck! Remember they are called "Rock Fish" for a good reason

My galley table is not big enough to lay all the way across, but I really like my paper charts! No, wait...I LOVE my paper charts. Electronic charts just don't have the same detail. Easier yes, detail no!

Arrow Re: GPS coordinates for Bottomfishing

A good tip is to get a very good, detailed chart. Look for high sites and rocky bottoms then go exploring... I have found my best spots doing this and I rarely see other boats while everyone on my boat is having non-stop action!

Being able to explore is one of the best things about fishing in the salt!
