Default Under the waves in Cozumel- Heavy SCUBA pics

I left the sport show on Thursday afternoon and headed to the airport where my wife and I flew to Cozumel for our annual warm water dive trip.

As usual, the marine life was awesome. Dove 4 days on the main reefs that are on the western side of Cozumel from the center south, with a dive at Punta Sur thrown in. These are the traditional dive sites ranging from beginner to advanced. Depths anywhere from around 100 feet to less than 30.

The weather cooperated and was able to get a day in on the North end of the island. This is advanced diving with heavy current and upwellings and downwellings along the walls. Currents typically range anywhere from 4-7 knots and at times and the tops of walls are at 100 feet. The downwellings can easily push an inexperienced diver from 100 feet down to 130+ in a blink of an eye. Remote, rugged, and beautiful. Where there are boats everywhere and lots of divers on the main reefs south each day, there is rarely more than one or 2 boats that will be up north if the weather allows.

We had also planned a day on the mainland diving Dos Ojos which is a cave/cavern system, but our dive operator screwed up and never showed. That was a major bummer as it was our last dive day and by the time we got back to Cozumel we couldn't dive due to flying the next day.

The other bummer about the trip was my cameras acted up. I had issues with my strobe and got 3 out of 5 days with my strobe and housing. Managed the other days with my backup camera and strobe. Still got some decent pictures, but missed a lot of good opportunities.

So, here goes.......

Always lots of eels waiting to be made famous..

I'd never seen this brown and yellow one before, so it was a new find for me...

And of course some monster green moray eels. Always nice to pose for a picture.

This is another one, that if you look closely you can see the outline of a nurse shark just behind in the overhand...

Not many eagle rays this year, but I did catch this one up north at Barracuda. I was down around 110 feet and just looked up in time to see it cruising above...

Spotted Drum....

Turtles...

Cowfish

Octos..

Splendid Toadfish...

And some bigger fish such as this HUGE Rainbow Parrot fish...

And this beautiful grouper....

Of course you need to look close too..... If you don't you'll miss guys like this that use the cover of an anenome as a home....

And if you take your time, you'll see that even some of the very smallest creatures out there are really amazing...

That should be good for now. Still plenty more, but that's a fair start.

Thanks to my wife and dad for another great trip.

And of course my wife had a lot of fun. Who else would do the SCUBA version of the sprinkler?

Great Pics! Sure makes me want to go blue water diving. The Vis looks awesome! What was your bottom time? Did you use Nitrox? I am also taking the advance course in March, with Underwater Works (Tigard) in Edmonds and Tacoma. Can I foward some of your pics to my dive buddies? When is the next dive trip?

Awesome stuff Mike! I really miss diving with my Dad. His glaucoma and age finally caught up with him so he can't go anymore.
Nice that you and your family can all do that together....lifetime memories for sure I love that close up of that shrimp.....amazing!

Please share what type of camera you used, I'm in the market for a new underwater camera. We're going back to Maui this year and my old sealife 35mm box camera stinks.
Thanks

These were taken on 2 different cameras. One is a Nikon Coolpix 5000 in an Ikelite housing with an Ikelite DS-125 strobe, and the other is an Olympus C5050z in an Olympus housing with a Sea&Sea DX25auto strobe.

Both are 5mp. The Ikelite camera and housing will be for sale shortly, but not the strobe.
