Exclamation Analog cell Phones, OFF Feb 19th

Bump this back up to folks,

If you have a Analog phone?.. It shall be a nice paper weight. after Feb 19th 2008 ( That is Today!). That signal will no longer be active, as with ONStar in older Autos.

YES, that means 911 on those phones are OFF TOO...

Have not seen local Media speaking of this?.

I watched a small bit on the news sunday. I'm still wandering if I will have any coverage out in the boonies where some of the only towers were analog.

Anyone know where to find cell tower locations ? analog or digital someone had to made maps of this.

i recently bought a new phone that is 100% digital with no analog and i get better reception with it than i ever did with any of my other phones. I can actually get service in the mountains in some areas that i could not before.

some carriors are extending the cut off date, unicel is mid may. 2/18/08 was the date the feds said they can turn it off. cellular amplifiers are available for digital cell phones. to give simular range as anolog service. we hope! i have one setup for hunting test results will be on hunting board. there is an extensive post on this topic on the hunting board

Dang, that's not good. Coverage for analog phones were much much more exclusive than digital phones because there are more towers spanning further apart. Which will give reception where digital phones don't in places like uninhabitant areas, where some of us might frequent. Does that mean coverage of digital phones have emcompassed those of analogs?

If that's the case, then by all means!

Ah yes, the fine points of digital phones. For those of you that never travel out of sight of the burbs they are great. But when you get into areas where towers are few and far between you begin to wonder what you will do if you need help as we have come to expect. When I first moved to Sisters it was with an analog phone. When we went to a digital phone the signal went from full signal to barely a signal and they put a tower within two miles of my house. Trees are a great filter of digital signal. Mountains do an even better job. I am waiting for the boaster report.

IF your in near City.. your Safe. Go into the coast range in some spots it's only analog ( my trail cam site).

Or Eastern Oregon.. away from the hwy's... Should be iffy...

Maybe they removed the analog and then they can Dble the power of the Digital signal to cover the dead areas?. We hope? If not... yikes Do not expect to call 911 & get medical Or Law help.. your on your own!!...

could be just a big market Scam??

will keep tabs on that Hunting camp Cell system being tested shortly.

Guess its time to leave verizon. The only reason ive had them is the tri mode analog/digital phones work more places than any other.

i talked to a verizon tech. he told me they where shutting down their anolog in febuary and would not be catching up with equal coverage for years, if at all. i was going to buy their service because they are in the process of taking over rural cellular corparation (UNICEL) in this area. they would have then have had the most complete tower coverage in rural oregon. BUT there was no guarantee the FCC would have allowed the combined tower use. so i stopped the process

All Digital phone already - so sorry doesn't really interest me. If I'm in the ding weeds I just turn the power on, tune to 40meters and find someone in the western US. From the Steens I talk to locals on 40 and friends in Montana. I usually send him a phone card and he has a phone patch - think back to the phone patches from the war and you got it Ham radio to the phone to phone home

Oh its more reliable than the sage bush by the gate and hold on to the barbed wire you'll get a better signal

How did we deal with this 20 years ago?

I'm not saying that cell phones are bad, I'm just saying that we didn't give it a thought 20 years ago. We just dealt with it.

I have Unicel, now what do I do? This is a case where newer isn't always better. We are looking at going back to shortwave, license needed along with testing, and CB radios for communication in the rural areas. For those of you that think it is fine to go back to the old ways, do you light your fires rubbing two sticks together? Maybe Sat phones will come down to a reasonable cost. I go on a camp out with a bunch of guys in the spring and one of them brought a Sat phone setup last year that used a regular phone. One of the guys is bringing an old phone booth this year to set the phone in.

My two sticks are road flares...

I hope Cell phones work, while in remote after all this.. if not.. Will just carry Extra spare tire.. for signal fire!! burns good 8 hours. Will get fast response from smoke jumpers & Humans.

Will just have to go camping & Call in a pizza to find out if it works or not?.
