Anyone fished with Deschutes Anglers before?
First fly fishing post... go easy on me.
I recently purchased ground in Maupin and will be relocating over there in 2009. I am wanting to get back into fly fishing the Deschutes and wanted a little hands on help. I haven't fly fished in years. I met the Deschutes Angler folks at the sportsman show and might use them this summer.
Just curious what you think. You can PM me if you would like.
Thanks
Andrew

Re: Anyone fished with Deschutes Anglers before?
I've never fished with them but I always make it a point to stop by the shop when I fish in Maupin. I've always found their staff to be very knowledgeable and helpful. I pretty much only fish for trout over there and they have not only been helpful but it's also always fun to just go there and shoot the sh1t with them and exchange ideas.
Others have a very different opinion of them but my experience has been nothing but positive.

Andrew,
You may want to check out the NW Fly Tyer Expo and Fly Fishing Show in Albany, Oregon this March 7th and 8th. Many classes on the Deschute River, Fly Casting classes and general knowledge classes being offered. Check out the Web Site at: www.nwflytyerexpo.com

Re: Anyone fished with Deschutes Anglers before?
I did a guided steelhead trip with them about 5 years ago. They did a great job and put me into alot of fish. Some people say they have had run ins with them on the river but my guide was laid back and professional.

Can't say anything good about them, so will say nothing at all.

Do a search for Hazel and you'll get a lot of opinions.

Re: Anyone fished with Deschutes Anglers before?
here we go again...
my suggestion is to go ahead and book them for a day...then you can be the judge. If you like them, book them again; in not, don't.
Everyone has an opinion (many based on experience)...but it's just that, 'opinions'...
again...

Re: Anyone fished with Deschutes Anglers before?
He asked for opinions and he got opinions. I think they were pretty tempered considering some of the strong opinions that are out there on these folks.
Just because you have a day or two on the water with someone doesn't mean you know them well. Same can be said for my experiences, the experiences of my friends, the experiences of several other ifishers, the experiences of a half dozen other guides I know and trust, etc.
Chug wants opinions. We gave our opinions. It's OK if they are different than yours. I'm glad you had a great experience with the Hazels. Mine are different so my opinion will differ appropriately. Does that seem unfair?

Re: Anyone fished with Deschutes Anglers before?
I agree with Two Fister. Opionions vary and they don't haveto be the same as yours. And you're right also Randy, here we WOULD go again if two fister had not tempered his comments. I think if he does the search as was suggested the "opinions" overwhelming.

My buddy raves about their shop and CS. He said Travis was a very good guide for steelhead and Amy was good for their spey cast class.

Re: Anyone fished with Deschutes Anglers before?
I guess if you are fishing with AMY and not by her your good. The only bad things ever said about them are her manners on the water. The fact is they put their clients on fish. I would book with them to get started.

The Riffle is great, they are in Warm springs though....I think the most laid back guides on the river!!!!

Re: Anyone fished with Deschutes Anglers before?
I would take a look at the Riffle as well. The guys at the Riffle are friendly, fishy, and easy to fish with. They have a shop in Warm Springs and in Bend, look them up. If you are a spey fisherman just looking for steelhead John and Amy are two of the best on the River but you have to put up with them for a whole day if you book with them. I could not stand to spend a whole day with either of them! They are good at wht they do but it is not all about catching, its about having a good experience on the river and I think the guys at the Riffle would give you a much more enjoyable day. Check out their guide profiles at the Riffle web site and pick your guide, there is one there for you.

Contact Brian Silvie. He is with out a doubt one of the greatest guides on that river. You will learn more in a day, then three years of do it yourself. Nothing against deschutes angler, great fly shop. I just think Brian is heads and tails above the other guides.

And, he is an ace on the Sandy. Brian may very well be one of the top 3 speycasters on the West coast to boot.
An excellent choice but you need to book him early....
He is quite popular and serves up great meals on his overnighters, AND day trips.....

Right on, I hate to miss a chance to pile it on DA. Jokes.... Seriously though, if you are looking to move into Maupin and actually live there these arent the folks to be seen around town with. And if this is a whos the best guide on the D thread, I'm throwing my two bits in for John Judy. -FF

Re: Anyone fished with Deschutes Anglers before?
With all the opinions here I am surprised no one has mentioned The Deschutes Canyon Flyshop. I have no personal experience with Deschutes Anglers (shop located in upper Maupin), but have only great things to say about The Deschutes Canyon Fly Shop DCFS(lower Maupin, other side of the river). I've been on 2-3 trips with John and his guides and attribute most of what I know about the river to what they have taught me. I believe John could catch redsides any day of the year on the river, sun or snow. He's patient and very knowledgable. It is hard to beat a shop that fishes the river just about every day.

Is there anyone else here who can chime in on this note?

Re: Anyone fished with Deschutes Anglers before?
John Smeraglio is a great guy, a great guide, and he will show you some great water around Maupin. He drives his truck along the access road to fish which gives him some advantage to cover more water in a day's fishing. Check out Deschutes Canyon before you go into D Angler then you decide which one you like and who you choose to give your money to. I perfer John Smeraglio at the Deschutes Canyon Fly Shop his shop is also right down on the River, he can even lead you in the right direction right from the shop.

Deschutes Canyon Fly Shop is the way to go. if you see John on the river, he is very cool and courteous. i can't say much good about the other place, so i won't say anything at all.
once you start fishing the D on a regular basis, you will see what we are talking about.

Re: Anyone fished with Deschutes Anglers before?
Andrew,
You silly goose, why pay when you can go with me for free. After 15 yrs of floating that river I think I know a few places where fish might be found. With the cost of fuel I think there will be a few less trips for tuna this year on those margional ocean days and I won't be sitting at home. I might even drag Jon and Stens along, after all whats a trip without entertainment and a camp cook.

Re: Anyone fished with Deschutes Anglers before?
In my opinion, the folks at Deschutes Anglers are good people and very qualified guides. I would also recommend talking to Chris O'Donnel with Adventures in Fly Fishing, who is also based out of Maupin.
