Default Old tackle buff needed

My boss collects old tackle. He has it piled around his office. If you went in for a meeting you would think this guy fishes all the time. I dont think he has bought a fishing license this century

Anyway, I took a picture of some of the stuff today and was curious what it may be worth. Or any history on this stuff. His wifes gets most of it at garage sales/swap meets etc.....

In this first photo there is a box of Pflueger fish hooks. I didnt even know Pflueger made hooks. cardboard box of 100 each No 3321-Br bronze rust proof 2/0 hooks. It says it is a Carlisle hook.

The other contraction looks like something from back east. A glass bubble with wire and hooks hanging off of it. In the glass is Welch & Graves, PAT Jan 393, Natural Bridge NY

In this photo is a couple lures made by hot shot (I thought Lure Jenson owned hot shot, must have bought these guys out) The right one is a hot shot that is #721 gold plated. The package says Eddie Pope & Co. Altadena Calif, The middle one is the same packaging but it is not a hot shot it is some sort of small spoon.

The contraption on the left is quite the unit. It says Reds Sure-Catch fish hook. You bait the top hook and when it is bit, the lower hook is spring loaded and swings up and hooks them from the bottom side (probably before catch and release) On the back of the package it says it is manufactured by Reds Chevrolet Co. Camden Tennessee and patented Feb 8, 1940

Anyway some pretty odd stuff from what you see today in the tackle shops

Well....Roy, I wished that I had that lure in the first pic...its a real classic! Im not sure without looking at it closer, but right now Im thinking that its one or the other in my book. Theyre made by Welsh& Graves; minnow tube for bass or pike. Depends on the shape its in, it might be worth 400 or 500 dollars made in New York, in 1893. But then Im just guessing with the help from a reference book.

The following info is from three reference books: "Classic Fishing Lures and Angling Collectibles", D.B. Homel, 1998; "Complete Guide to Sporting Collectibles", R. Coykendall, Jr., 1996; and "Fishing Lure Collectibles", Murphy and Edmisten, 1995. Obviously these sources are dated somewhat.

The Pflueger fish hooks were likely made about 1940. They are similar to snelled Carlisles listed in Homel's book, where he gives them a value of $45-75 for 100 snelled hooks.

The Welch & Graves minnow tube is very pricey, with a likely value of $300-400. Whew!

No idea of the other items. I'll bring these reference books and some others to the Ifish tackle swap meet on the 10th.

Bill had some Pflueger hooks at one time in wooden tubes. He says he can't recall whatever happened to them.
Are those in the book?

I talked to an antique collector today about the minnow tubes. He said because its missing the end piece, its only worth half of the price. :depressed: But its still a good find. But remember its only worth it if you have the right person to buy it. Im jealous, what a find! My information I got from a newer published book, Thumper.

Jen -- quoting Homel: "Pflueger always offered a wide variety of excellent hooks, many of which were packaged in wooden cylinders topped by the famous bull-dog label. A plethora of hooks under dozens of different names came nestled in curious waxed paper envelopes, painted tins, glassine sleeves, and imbedded in folded cardboard sheets." But no indication of dollar value.

Pflueger hooks are still common, the box would bring about $5. The wood Pflueger hook tubes are worth $2-3. The glass minnow tube is by far the best item. The Red's hook on the card is about $10.

The Eddie Pope display board I have has the hotshots displayed in clear plastic tubes. They are plastic and probably just predate the plastic sealed cardboard. I have a bunch of blued pflueger hooks wrapped in wax paper then boxed. Kind of neet to dig through some of the old stuff.
My big passion has been the wood flatfish in two piece cardboard boxes, the old bait casters and assorted steelhead memorabilia. Every now and then I find some neat stuff.

Cool looking old stuff. I think the first clear bubble is a place to put a live minnow inside your bait.
Pflueger made more stuff than anyone person can collect. They were the fishing industry and involved in every aspect of tackle manufacturing.

Hotshot was originally made by Eddie Pope and were made of wood..then plastic. Lure Jensen bought them out along with lots of other small sucessful fishing companies. They usually keep the brand identity and discontinue as they see fit...ugh.

Never seen the last one on the left. Gotta love contraptions  .
Thanks for sharing Roy
