Default Umpqua Striped Bass....anybody??

I see the Oregon state record of 64lbs 8oz was caught in 1973 on the Umpqua. Can any ifish members help with information about this fishery? Are they sea going? Are there still fish of this size in the Umpqua? Any Oldtimers (or pros) out there with information?? Thanks!

I can't answer any specifics, but they do go from ocean to estuary (anadromous sp). I want to hear about the Columbia system Stripers that visit Portland in the late spring. There was a blurb in the Oregonian several years ago but that was the last I heard.

Stripers are still around in the lower Umpqua river. Last time I was down there, they were using live bait (chubs) and fishing in the Smith River(I think its called the Smith), which is a small tributary of the Umpqua. There is a small tackle shop in Reedsport that could help you out, but unfortunately I don't remember the name. You could probably look it up on line. I have seen big stripers come out of the Smith river(40#'s), but it has been a few years since I lived in that area. They are tough to catch and local information is a must to get dialied in.

Smith river, late evening early morning, Jerkbaits on the surface, be very quiet. I say no more for fear of my life There are other places though. And I sure miss the hybrid bass from tenmile and equally fun fish.
