dream hunt
I am starting to plan a dream hunt for 2009. If money was not a problem where would you go. Would you hire a guide that you have used before? What species of big game would you hunt? I am looking for ideas for a hunt in North America. What would you hunt with, modern rifle, achery, black powder? Any and all ideas are appreciated. If you have used a guide before and would like to recommend them I would appreciate the tip. I currently hunt for deer and elk in WA.
thanks

Re: dream hunt
For me, it would be Stone Sheep in the NWT or Ibex and Argali in Mongolia or Tajikstan.

Re: dream hunt
Was lucky enough to already fulfill my dream hunt in 2005. Chased around Dall Sheep in Alaska. Hope to do it again someday. It's great having a brother who is an Alaskan resident and an absolute sheep nut!

Re: dream hunt
Sheep hunting is pretty incredable, I hunted bighorns for 2 weeks and it was an unbelievable experience, I have killed big elk. mountain goat, moose, deer and antelope and sheep was by far the most exciting!

Re: dream hunt
Dream hunt....I would say sheep, but unless you can drop $30,000 for a gauranteed tag, its not really a likely deal.
For me it would have to be a monster bull on the San Carlos with Home Stevens ($30,000, I believe), a huge Sanoran muley with Big Game Outfitters ($15,000), or a Yukon Moose or Grizz Jim Shockey ($25,000).
All of course with a bow

Re: dream hunt
People have different dreams. If you're talking about a guided hunt, then for me it would have to be in Alaska..and probably Dall Sheep would be the quarry. The stupidest thing I ever did was fail to go on a Dall Sheep hunt during the 8 years I lived there. I could have done it without a guide, but somehow never put it together. I still can't believe I never "got around to it". Now it would require a guide and be very expensive. I never had a huge interest in taking a bear, although I had many, many opportunites. I bought a Grizzly tag one year there and made a successful stalk on one and decided to pass.
For me my dream hunts are "do it yourself" on public land. Again Alaska is the place, and aside from Sheep hunting which I never did, calling and hunting big bull Moose was the most exciting and fun hunting I have ever done
In light of the above, my "dream hunt" (which I have done and hope to do again) would be a do it yourself wilderness river float trip in Alaska for Moose

Re: dream hunt
were going to due a float trip in Alaska for Caribou in 2009 and then were doing a pack in Moose hunt in BC in 2010. Were doing both hunts pretty cheaply but You know how that goes.

Re: dream hunt
If I could hunt anything and go anywhere to do it, I think I would start with a Marco Polo Ram in Tajikistan or Kyrgyzst. If I couldn't manage that hunt I would head for AK for Dall Sheep.

Re: dream hunt
One dream hunt would be hunting Doves in Argentina. I think that would just be a blast. I don't know if this would qualify but, some year I would love to start the spring in Florida, and then travel across the U.S. for the whole spring to get a grand slam on turkeys. Also, hunting elk in Arizona or New Mexico would be quite fun. Alright sorry, I can't pick just one.

Re: dream hunt
I'd love to go hunt the huge mulies down in old Mexico. Just seeing one that would go 36" or more would be worth the price of the trip.
Or an Elk hunt in New Mexico or Arizona.
Or maybe bighorn sheep- anywhere I could get a tag.
Moose with a friend of mine. He has a honey hole that hold huge bulls, but it's so hard to get into nobody else hunts it.
Muskox in Ak.
Free ranging Bison
But the top of the list is a Polar Bear in the Arctic.

Re: dream hunt
Well, my last dream hunt was Dall Sheep. But since I did that one last year I'm on to my next voyage. It's going to be a moose float hunt that may end up being grizzly, sheep, or caribou depending on what animal shows itself first. I'll have a moose tag, but my uncle (ak resident) will be cleaning house on the rest of the critters! Should be a wild trip to say the least. So after this year, I'm going to concentrate on getting another sheep tag lined up somewhere in the lower 48. Once you go sheep hunting, it definitely gets in the blood. Absolute dream hunt would be Marco Polo Sheep in my eyes.

Re: dream hunt
1. Archery elk hunt during the rut on great private land in Utah, Arizona, New Mexico, Colorado or Montana. Bulls bugling, elk all over the place, chance to shoot a decent one. (Don't need a guide but it's usually part of the deal.)
2. Caribou hunt in the Alaska or Canadian Arctic. Unguided drop camp on the migration route with the opportunity to look over lots of critters. Two 'bou area so I can smoke check a good one and then chase another with the pointed sticks.
3. Archery hunt in South Africa. Sitting in the blind at the water hole watching the critters come in and piling up the trophy fees.
Will do all of these before my time is done.

Re: dream hunt
My dream hunt is coming true in Aug. of 2009. I'll be going to South Africa to take impalla, blesbok, kudu, (with my bow) gemsbok, & lion, (with my .338) baboons, jackals, with a varmit rifle that I'm trying to aquire now. My wife is coming with me as my videographer & photographer.... 10 days huning for around $10,000 for the two if us. EVERY ONE I KNOW THAT HAS BEEN TO AFRICA started planning their next trip BEFORE they left.
I KNOW that I'll be going back with my 2 sons 1-2 years afer my trip. Next time Cape Buffalo, blue & black gnu, & eland for me plains game for them. I'll be needing a bigger cannon for that though.

Re: dream hunt
Stone Sheep in Northern BC or the Yukon.. I hunted Bighorns in the Cadomin Mines area and had a GREAT time. Dall sheep in Alaska runs a close second.

Arizona archery elk
Waterfowl in Canada
I'm sure there are more but these are two that jump out at me
Sheep and Moose used to be high on the list but times and wants change
Then there are couple of fishing trips that would rate high on the list too

Re: dream hunt
Archery Spot and stalk trophy black bear on that Island in Alaska with my best freind as back up. The hunt you do when you catch them out on the low tide in a skiff and try and ambush them where they return. I understand the base camp is at a river mouth where you can also fish between stalks. As I last checked the prices were not all that unreasonable and that included the tags too.
Pheasent hunting one more time with my old dog boomer in N.dakota would be cool too as long as were dreaming.
