I use the funky colored ones for both salmon and steelhead. They work once in a while.

I use fresh prawns when driftfishing for steelhead & salmon. A little change up from sand shrimp, etc.
When trolling a prawn, I cure them.

I mentioned this is another post. Fresh bait is the best bait. Cured or un cured. Funky colors catch more fishermen than fish as far as I'm concerned. I have fished prawns for a long time and use natural, red. As long as their fresh. The others colors will catch fish as well. Just not as many as the red or natural in my experience.

Dudley Nelson Tagged a 20 # springer on Thursday. He used a prawn that were sitting in his Frig from last year. He uses cured and uncured prawns depending on how much time he has to prepare.
He says he doesn't notice any difference. Dudley catches lots of fish eiter way..
Some people I know let the prawns spin, some use spinners and other people don't.

I guess what it comes down to is that you'll will gain confidence with what ever works for you.
And confidence is what is most important. I believe if you get it in front of them " The will hit "

I do believe that scent attracts. I believe it will pull fish towards you from down stream.

But I could be all wrong, I don't know. I do catch fish.
This year I put some prawns up in Amermans Salmon cure and added Hot pink.
They sizzle. I can't wait to try em out.

Your question is interesting though.

Husker,
I buy my prawns at Umajamayas(sp?). The asian food store on BH Hwy in Beaverton.
I use the raw prawns when I drift fish occasionally. For curing, you can purchase the cooked ones there, then cure them.I buy raw myself and cure them at home. Different cures out there as much as egg cures.
E-mail me if you want my recipie.

I've had some luck cureing them in Anise or BalloFire and sealing them up in a small ball jar.

I like to carry both in the boat with me. The cured ones taste kind of salty though

On a serious note,

What we do is get a couple of guys together every year and buy a case of prawns from Pacific Seafood to split between us. We then cure the case in to 1/3's. Red, orange and purple are the three colors we use. We typically use a a store purchesed cure as a base and then add my own little not so secret addatives. I like to keep mine seperated by color in gallon jars packed with rock salt. Keep in the fridge. Once cured and on salt they will keep for a long time.

Watch the salt. It will dry them out if kept in alot of salt for long periods of time.
