Attack of the Shaker Sturgeon
Help!
Anyone know why so few keepers in the Troutdale area? All the shakers caught were 18" or so, no 25", 37" etc. and didn't see or hear of any boats with keepers.
Was thinking of trying the Cowlitz area or perhaps Kelly point. Anyone been fishing there lately?
Thanks,
ThePerchMaster

Re: Attack of the Shaker Sturgeon
Sounds like you need to fish in faster water. After 5 shakers in a row or even fewer I'll move unless I'm on a proven slot. Sometimes moving as little as 20 feet to faster water will get you into bigger fish.

Re: Attack of the Shaker Sturgeon
Here is a silly question, where is the Fishery? Is that a name for Kelly point/terminal six?

The Fishery is right below Bonneville. Around Horsetail falls.

Re: Attack of the Shaker Sturgeon
Theperchmaster, the fishery is about 3 to 4 miles past multnomah falls it cost 7 dollars to put in. head down river about 1/2 mile or so, really just follow the other boats. Make sure you stay out of the shipping channel!!! The last two times I've been there it seems everybody was catching fish. Hopes this helps you out?

Re: Attack of the Shaker Sturgeon
Thepearchmaster, I fished Troutdale (under the powerlines) on Saturday, and got 1 keeper (43") and 8 shakers. The shorts were really short, about 18-24".

Re: Attack of the Shaker Sturgeon
Today we caught seven shakers ranging up to thirty five inches and one eight to nine foot monster that we chased around with a 17' Duckworth for almost an hour. We finally got it to the boat and got some pics of it. No keepers in the boat today though. However, I would rather catch one monster than two or three keepers anyday. Although, it was a lot of work!

Re: Attack of the Shaker Sturgeon
It wasn't windy at all today. It was just a little rainy is all. However, there are times when no boat should be out there.

Re: Attack of the Shaker Sturgeon
Invader,
The wind is usually only a problem when it is a west wind. Wind against the current causes the big chop. The wife and I fished up at the Fishery on Thursday and Sunday. Thursday had a light east wind but Sunday had a shifty southeast wind. It blew your boat around quite a bit but the water was quite safe.
We had the best luck with Cowlitz smelt and sturgeon scent from Tillamook Bait Co. Got some action on pickled squid too.
Thursday: 1-43" keeper, 1-10' monster, 25 or so shakers.
Sunday: no keepers (a couple close) or oversized, 30+ shakers
