Default GPS

OK....I am guilty of not paying attention to educational posts...that bugs me when others do it about eggs, etc... So sorry in advance. I am looking for a good basic GPS...it does not have to have bells and whistles it just needs to have the ability to get me there and back.

I am tapping the wealth of experience and knowledge here....

Thanks,

Jim

Garmin GPS III with the mapping capability!

Pocket-sized and portable. Goes about 20 hours or more on 4 AA's. Tracks my trolling speed and leaves me a 'cookie-crumb' trail so I can get back to the ramp in the fog.
So many features, I've not gotten them all thru my pea-brain yet!

You should be able to save a $$ or two by going thru Sportco.

Try this http://www.garmin.com/products/gpsIIIp/

Jim,
I upgraded to the to to Garman gps 76 this last year and I have loved it. It has the channel markers and bouys all in it all ready. A nice big LCD and buttons on the front. It is a hand held unit so I can also use in off the boat as well. I would not get combo sonar gps boat mount unit like I had before because when one breaks you are S.O.L. and not far ahead in the $ game.
Hope it helps

Hi.I have a Garmin GPS 12,its a couple yrs. old now and it was alot easier to learn to use then I thought it would and the new are even easier. There not very expensive either
its a hand held and if a dummy like me can use it anybody can.I use it mostly to mark my favorite fishing spots.I did make a terrible mistake with it awhile back,I was deleteing a few spots,I didn't go to anymore
and was not paying attention and ended up deleteing all my spots now I've got to start all over again.I think it would still be a good idea to have a compass with you if nothing else just so you could find north.
If you can buy a GPS buy it thay are a really good thing to have.

Jim,

If you want to max your accuracy, look into a unit that is WAAS enabled. A neat unit out now is the Garmin 176. It is portable, although slightly larger than the GPS III Plus, but is WAAS enabled as well. If you want a real small unit look into the eTrex Vista. It is also WAAS enabled.

FYI - I have used the GPS III, and liked it very much.

Jim, the Garmin GPS III Plus is what I have and I got it at/thru Sportco at you-know-who's cost for $325. You should be able to get the good price, too.

I love all the things it's capable of and its small size.

I can take it in the truck, motorhome, boat etc. Took it to New Jersey last month so I could follow the 'cookie crumbs' if I needed to find my way back to the hotel etc.

I have a Garmin GPS 12. It is very simple to operate, use it on my boat, truck, and out in the woods hunting. You can find then for less than $130 if you look. Have fun with the new toy.

I purchased a Lowrance Global Map 100 last winter. It came with a CD to down load specific locations for both street and navigational details. The mapper screen is small but at a 1.5 mile scale works very well. I used it in the lower Columbia fishery this summer and it was extreemly accurate and the route tracking feature was very helpful in repeating trolling drifts where I had success. The WAAS technology memtioned above is of no value now that the GPS scramblers have been turned off. I researched hand held GPS's on the Internet and the Global Map 100 recieved the highest marks for a hand held unit with mapping capability.
