University of Portland?
Any of you guys have any experience with U Portland? This is one of the schools Junior is considering to going to.
I am going to bring him over in March and take a look. Where would you stay nearby? Can you get to it via the light rail or do I need to rent a car?
Thanks for any help.

Re: University of Portland?
The MAX (light rail) doesn't go out there but I am sure the buses do. A car would be the best for schedule/destination flexibility!
Some of my coworkers have taken classes out there and liked it.
Where to stay?!?!? I'd offer a spare room if I had one... I am more familiar with the west side (west of the hill)
That's the University of Portland, right? and not Portland State University (completely different and on the opposite ends of town)

Re: University of Portland?
I graduated from there about 100 years ago. But today I would go to a publically-supported university for the first two years, at least, before jumping into that pile of debt.

The hotels/motels that are closest aren't what I'd call desirable places to stay. The school itself is in a good neighborhood, but it's residential, and the nearest lodging is in a rather "dodgy" area, to put it politely.
You're either going to be renting a car or riding the Mobile Leper Colony (Tri-Met).

Re: University of Portland?
Beautiful school, and from the two people I know who went there who majored in different subjects, the quality of education is well worth it.

Re: University of Portland?
I will get a Hotel nearby, if you can think of one handy. He tells me as valedictorian of his HS class he gets a 50% discount.
He also plans to run so I am hoping for a little more help.
A thought I ahd on the way home if I wanted to take him fishing, where would you go (guided).

It's on the northern aspect of town...so I would venture the easiest steelhead fishing would be the Sandy...leave campus, make your way to I-84 (a couple of miles maybe), then head 17 miles on the interstate, look over the bridge into the Sandy, take your next right turn (exit 18), drive about .75 mile, turn right over old bridge, first building on the right should be a very popular tackle shop that is owned by a very talented spinner maker and local "go to man" for Sandy info.
Your next choice may be to get onto I-84, travel to exit 9, (about 6 miles)take I-205 south to somewhere around exit 17 (aka: about five or six miles), follow route 224 east to follow the Clackamas river high high high into the mountains.
So the shorter version of my whole reply is that the Sandy and Clackamas, two of the more popular steelhead streams around, are less than 30 miles from campus.
The Willamette for sturgeon is beside campus and the Columbia is a really hard stone's throw away ('bout 3 mile as the crow flies. Plunking for the fish of your choice on Sauvie's island is less then ten miles away.
By the way...this part of the world is no fun at all ;-)
Coastal rivers are an hour's drive if there is no traffic.
I don't know any guides and the last time I dropped the contact details of a gear shop, I got my hand slapped for not following the protocal for ifish posting. I'll leave the details of that part of the equation to others.

Re: University of Portland?
I graduated 1964 MBA 1966 my son and daughter spent 9 yrs in a row
on campus. It is the most beautiful campus in town. I am sure the
registrars office would help you with a place to stay and tour.

Re: University of Portland?
UP is a very good school, nice campus in residential neighborhood. Getting to and from is through some sketchier areas but the areas south and directly east are improving. It's close enough to downtown but it's not an urban campus.
March SHOULD mean springers in the Willamette but the run predictions are low. There will be a fair amount of guides fishing there in March so check the ones on the main board. Some are probably already booked.
A few of us will no doubt be fishing then if the weather and river cooperate. You could probably post right before you get here. I would, or a few others would usually be glad to haul you around for a few hours. Springer fishing can be slooow going but it's a cool way to drive through downtown.

Re: University of Portland?
My wife graduated from UP in Nursing. They have a program with Providence for a "scholarship" (work for Providence 3 years and a big chunk of loans are "paid back"). Some of her friends graduated in Accounting, and Business Marketing/Managment. A couple guys used ROTC and are moving up through the Air Force ranks.
UP is a highly respected institution.

No discomfort here, just a scathing observation.
In reluctant defense of Tri-Met, the last city bus I rode was in Las Vegas, and Tri-Met looks pretty good by comparison.
We now return you to our regularly scheduled UP thread. Go Pilots!!

Re: University of Portland?
I graduated from there in 1990. I still feel that my four years and $ spent out there was the best investment of time and money I have made. Feel free to pm me if you have any specific questions.
Like others have recommended, get a car and stay out by the airport.

Don't you mean PU Jack? My Dad played football for the Pilots for 3 years.

Re: University of Portland?
I'd pick a hotel across the river on Hwy 30, much easier, much closer. Just over the St.John's Bridge. Is that a Comfort Inn at Vaughn & Hwy 30? It's set up for business travelers.
As for the nearby neighborhoods of St.Johns, no worries (17 years of working/traveling there). Darn tame compared to the inner city neighborhoods of any big city. No comparison whatsoever. (unless by 'sketchy' they were referring to all the IFishers that live there!)

Re: University of Portland?
I got my M.A. from UP in 2006. The campus is beautiful and I'm sure you and your child will enjoy the visit.
As far as academics go, I was totally disappointed with my experience at UP. I had a handful of creative and inspiring instructors, but for the most part, I was not challenged by the curriculum and did not expand upon the analytical and writing skills I honed as an undergraduate at a public state university. The resources (i.e library, gym, computer labs) also leave a lot to be desired.
On the bright side, I could ride my bike to the Willy after class and plunk for sturgeon or cast for smally's.

Re: University of Portland?
Thanks for all of the info. This is our first trip. Georgetown, Duke, Rice, Uinversity of Washington in St Louis and Iowa are on his list as well.
We will see how it all works out. I told him what I can afford to pay. I am not going in to debt at this time of my life. I don't think it is worth it to go to deep in debt on an under grad degree. I would not be opposed to see him borrow a few bucks to get through med school. He could pay that back pretty quickly.
I have a sailboat to buy and oceans waiting to sail across.
