Nasty hockey injury last night
http://sports.aol.com/fanhouse/2008/...ammates-skate/
This was hard for me to watch last night, looked awfully bad and it was even worse then it looked. Glad he is OK.

Re: Nasty hockey injury last night
Wow. I'm surprised that does not happen more often. One comment I saw was that it might be time to consider requiring some sort of neck guard for the players. Sounds like a good idea. Glad to hear he's doing ok.

Re: Nasty hockey injury last night
That video link did not show what I saw on the late news last night. You hear the commentary about it, but it was horrifyingly amazing as to how much blood was just FLYING out his neck!
Carrotid artery injuries are almost always a nearly instant death sentence. The fact that he is so tough and was able to get up and hold his neck until the towel pressure was applied, combined with immediate medical attention and intervention is what saved his life.
30 seconds is all it takes. Pumps you dry that fast, then the brain and organs shut down...
Lucky man

Wow.... That is just too freaky. That is one very lucky man tonight. It is very shocking it doesn't happen more often.

Re: Nasty hockey injury last night
I remember when the Sabres goalie got cut back in the early 90's I think.
Nasty bit of business. You know damn well that in just a few minutes you will be in cardiac arrest when there is nothing left to pump.
Fortunately this type of injury is rare.
Kudos to the medical staff that save Zednik's life.

Re: Nasty hockey injury last night
Growing up in S.D. and hanging around alot of icerinks in and around the midwest. I've seen a fair share of incidents. None more severe than what I saw last night. That is the most unlikely of all injuries to happen. I've ran a pair or two of skates through the blade sharping machine and I tell ya those edges are lethal.
Worst I ever witnessed was a linesman at a college game in Minn. A 6' 8" defenseman went to clear the puck out of his zone and fed the linesman about a 100mph. slaper. Split both his upper/lower lips and knocked out most of his front teeth. He was on the ice face down for about 20 sec. before anyone got to him. About a 12" diameter pool of blood in no time.
It's a tough sport played by tough guys. Remember when there were no helmets! I hope it never happens again.

Re: Nasty hockey injury last night
I was eating a bowl of Nally's chili when that video came over the local news.
I almost lost it.
Then the sports guy does a slo-motion frame-by-frame of the carnage...

Re: Nasty hockey injury last night
I still have my Hawks Z-Man poster! Richard has amazing upper body strength and one-handed stick handling skills. I hope his recovery is fast and complete. For a guy who was too small for the NHL, he's sure opened lots of eyes.

Clint Malarchuk is his name, and he's the reason why NHL goalies now have neck protectors. The videos from that incident are not for the queezy.

Re: Nasty hockey injury last night
Actually it was his carotid. Barely missed the jugular. The carotid was almost completely severed and they had to pump five units of blood into him at the hospital
