Default 3d period goosin'--shooting incident

Was hunting a field with another hunting party using part of the same field-they were set up close to a RR bed & road. A passing motorist/idiot decided to target practice with the other group's DSDs, thinking they were live geese. Shooting three times w/a .22, luckily no one was hurt, no decoys damaged. A nearby resident who watched the whole thing happend was good enough to chase the guy down, get the plate number and get the info to the sherriff, who later apprehended the individual. The landowner intends to follow through and see that charges are pressed.

Makes you wonder during our first goose hunt the rifle shots that lifted all the geese from the field we were hunting were they at the Elk or the geese in front of us. They did make me a little nervous

This is getting crazy and I'm afraid the message will never get out to the idiots who are doing this. Maybe a few arrests will help, but I wonder if we need to start posting the entire perimeters of our fields.

Please post any follow up info.

Can you disclose basics of area? County, general area?

Was the shooter involved with farming in the area or just someone driving around the country looking for something to shoot at?

With the realistic decoys and efforts we go through for concealment, I worry this may happen more.

A kid was killed in I think Missouri earlier this year in the same exact situation. A passing truck stopped and shot out the window at a hunters decoys with a .22 and killed a kid laying in a blind. Not a good situation when this is becoming a more frequent occurrence.

Just scary!!! Glad to hear everyone is ok. People dont seem to have a clue and that needs to change somehow. I think a little media coverage might be a good idea, it might save a life or two and that would be worth it.

Makes me wonder how many times they have actualy got away with this on real live birds before.I kinda doubt it's the first time they tried to take geese like that.I'm just glad to hear these idiots didn't hit anybody.

Because they're killers- not hunters, this is probably not the "first time" they've done this. It makes me sick that some people consider it hunting. Gives the rest of us a bad name in the community. We shot a turkey last year that had been shot sometime earlier with a .22 in the leg. Funny thing, it didn't die and it was green as grass- the whole bird was bad! Kept the tail and threw away the "green" meat. Made me sick! The next day saw a kid bail from his car and shoot a bird that was running down the road. Oh- it was a hen!! I cant figure out why people get a thrill out of unethical killing vs. hunting. Hunting is so much more fun!!

This happened down in Brownmead on alease that I manage. This is a very unfortunate incident for all of my lease holders and we are hopefully going to throw the book at this 20 year old kid. Our landowner spoke with the kids folks and they had gotten very defensive with him as I understand making it seem as no big deal, but this is a very very big deal as someone could have been seriosly injured or killed. I will be in touch with our guy's involved in this to hopefully press charges. I will keep all informed as I get more info..... Carl

I've been thinking about this a great deal, as are all of us who try to get invisible next to a flock of the most realistic decoys on the planet. When is our turn coming? We know of a couple people who have been killed this way, and all the 'chasing down the perps' isn't going to bring them back.

Without hijacking the thread, what should we do to make ourselves safer? Should we put up signs along all the roads around a field? Should we stick a sign in the middle of the decoys that says "DECOYS," or should we post someone on lookout in case some idiot drives up and sticks a rifle out his window? Maybe we should add some steel bullet traps to our gear.

And as for the 'kid' and his defensive parents, why not invite him to come hunting with you, and ask his mom if it's okay if he lays out there in a canvas blind while rifle bullets zing around him. She should be okay with that, don't you think?

If my son pulled a stunt like that he would be more worried about what I was going to do him than the authorities. Probably another case of the apple not falling far from the tree...his Dad probably taught him how to "hunt".

I was not really going to post and say anything until I read what the parents attitude was.

But I was there I was in that field with Brian and my 2 sons ages 12 and 17 years old. There is no excuse for this kind of thing. When the lives of my boys are put in jepeardy. this was our first goose hunt ever. If the parents of that 20yr old won't get excited

THEN I WILL GET PLENTY EXCITED FOR THEM AND ANYONE ELSO WHO DOSEN'T THINK THE LIVES OF MY BOYS OR FRIENDS ARE OF ANY VALUE TO GET EXCITED ABOUT. ITS A MATTER OF PERSPECTIVE THEY DONT WANT THERE SON TO GO TO JAIL NO HARM NO FOUL (NOT THIS TIME BUT WHAT ABOUT NEXT TIME)

I watched one of those hunting shows once that was really cool there was some goose hunters that had a ton of decoys and all knew how to call birds really good if you know what I mean but didnt have a field to hunt from. They meet some local farm kids and their dad let them setup and hunt their farm the kids got to hunt with these guys and a sweet deal was formed. Local kids got to hunt and hard core hunters got to use some cool land. I would love to have some 20yr old kid come up and say man I know where there are a ton of birds its on my land or I know the owner would you guys want to team up?

BUT ONCE YOU BREAK THE LAW AND SHOOT AT ME OR MY KIDS ITS TIME TO RETHINK

This type of behavior should in no way be acceptable...

I dont care if the shooter was a 15 year old or a 50 year old. A bullet shot by either kills the same!!! There is a very nice tribute for Jocelyn Leger on the Avery website. He was killed this year in Canada while goose hunting by a .22 caliber bullet shot into his goose spread.

I had a long conversation with OSP this year when I was checked while goose hunting. They told me that they had actually just busted a couple people in that area for doing the same thing. The problem for OSP is that it is very difficult to "catch" someone in the act.

I hope you and the land owner can follow thru and press charges.

Dan if someone shot a HP rifle and the bullet went anywhere near you, you would have heard the crack of the bullet a few seconds before the rifle shot. Just hopefully putting you at ease a bit over the elk hunters.

The crack of a HP bullet nearby is unmistakeable (and will sure raise goosebumps!). You can get a ballpark estimate of how far away the shooter is by counting the seconds between the "crack" and the "boom". Figure one second per 350 yards or thereabouts, the math is a bit fuzzy because the bullet is slowing down. 1080 fps or thereabouts is how fast sound travels. Doesn't usually work with rimfires as they are often below the speed of sound when they come by if you are any distance at all.

As for the 20 year old shooting into y'alls decoy spread- darn glad nobody got hurt. Like the other poster said, if it were my kid the authorities would be the least of his worries. The parents need to get a copy of the news article about the young man who got killed in the same situation. I'd hate to think we're going to have to start sandbagging around our layout blinds.

I'm glad- real glad- he got caught. This needs to get a bit of press attention as well.

regards, aw

This is really sad to hear. Make you worry about goose hunting anywhere near a road. I was just thinking if you were hunting near a road, it might be a good idea to keep a piece of blaze orange in the blind with you, and if you happen to see a car slowing down on a road, you can wave that at them. That probably won't do a whole lot because if there are any birds working, you will be covered up in the blind watching the birds. But if you were just sitting there looking for another flock, and you saw a car slowing down, it might just help. Anyways, glad to hear no one was hurt in the incident.

I guess were all gonna have to start putting a hot pink flamingo in the middle of the spread.Problem is these idiots would probably shoot the flamingo thinking it to be a real trophy.

This was discussed recently. My decoys have been shot at, once with a shotgun, once with a .22 duck hunting.

Glad they got the guy. Welcome to the coast and hunting in Brownsmead - this is not an uncommon occurance. Ive heard of the local Brownsmead guy shooting sheep just to watch them "hunch up".

During the off season maybe you should add kevlar to your layout blind.
