Dads & Daughters in the Outdoors
I've seen a lot of previous threads of Dads & Daughters. I can't wait for mine to be old enough.
My friends at work chipped in and got her a PINK .22. It's longer than she is.
I gotta show her off a little.....

Re: Dads & Daughters in the Outdoors
The thing I found with my two kids,is do not scrimp. Get them some excellent gear, warm clothes and things that work. Set a reasonable pace.
Make it fun.
True story. When my son was 4, I was planning to go hunting with a long term hunting buddy. He is a great guy, no kids and a lot selfish. We were going to SW Colorado to shoot Doves, temps in the 100's. He calls the week before and is taking a guy from Oregon. Mealy mouths around about maybe we should take two cars. It did not take a genius to figure out he did not want his hunting shortened up by my kid.
Wylie and I drive down and meet them and stay in the same motel. Next morning hunting is good, but HOTTTTTT! I got all the drinks and stuff I need. Guess who drags up and has to go the motel, the guy from Oregon.
Bummer buddy.
It was the last time he ever pulled anything. He has flown Wylie, now seventeen down twice to go hunting with him. They are the best of friends.
So be prepared for that, they change things. It is a change for good if you keep it fun and don't scrimp. If you are tight, scrimp on your stuff.
DW, been there done it and had a great time doing it.

Re: Dads & Daughters in the Outdoors
My daughter is wicked on the smallies when we float the John Day, and has done some coastal duck hunting with me. She liked the daisey red rider for shooting deeks..She loved it when I cleaned them, and got quite the bio lesson from disecting the gizzards. She is 16 now and doesn't have the same level of interest in hanging out with her dad, but her and her friends are gonna do a 2 night John Day float in June. Kids in Oregon should take in the great outdoor opportunities we have, and if you can get a female intersted in such things she's more likely to pair up with the right kind of guy, imo.

Re: Dads & Daughters in the Outdoors
Good advice, Duckwheat. That's what I did with my wife, and she learned it was fun and exciting to be out in the woods. Her gear was as good or better than mine, and I never made fun of her or made her feel inept. Her family never hunted of fished, so it was up to me to show her the magic of the outdoors -- and now she's hooked!
In fact, we're headed out to hike some trails above our house today, and she reminded me to take my coyote calls. Heh, heh, heh.
PS. If you EVER have any father/daughter questions, ask Rauly or Gun Rod Bow. They are my heroes.

Re: Dads & Daughters in the Outdoors
Took my daughter for her first hunt this year. She is six. We drove down to Utah to go with my father on an elk hunt. She is growing so fast and I knew that likely any gear I bought would only be used on this trip. She would out grow it before another trip came around. But I spent the money and boy it was a good thing. We dealt with sub zero temps while we were there but she was warm and never complained except if we missed eating when we should have.

Re: Dads & Daughters in the Outdoors
Not a hunting pic, but I never pass up a chance to post a pic of my daughter.
She has been catching fish with me since she was about 3.
My son is almost three and he has been fishing since he was 2.
I teach my kids early that you have to sneak up on the game you are hunting, and I have told them they can not hunt until they have mastered this technique. It looks like I have to take them hunting this year.

Re: Dads & Daughters in the Outdoors
I too gelieve in getting your kids/wife the best gear you can. If they are cold, wet, have ill fitting hand me downs you are setting them up for a bad expereince. My wife now askes to go flyfishing...and has better gear than I do.... Oh here is a photo of my wife & daughter fishing a few years ago. My daugher turned 7 today...where does the time go....

Re: Dads & Daughters in the Outdoors
We just had a little girl 7 months ago.. I had her on my back yesterday for about 3 hours hiking for sheds.. At 1.5 months old she got her first pic with an archery bull..I don't really think she'll know there are any other options then being out there doing what mom and dad love doing..They sure are a blast.

Re: Dads & Daughters in the Outdoors
Here's my Little One at 10. She was casting on the Deschutes near Sunriver and got a little carried away on one cast. I fished her out, but it scared her pretty good.
Here she is last fall on her first deer hunt in the Paulina Unit.

Re: Dads & Daughters in the Outdoors
Wil- We've sort of talked about it, but I don't know why we haven't gone on a double dad/daughter date!?
My pictures are mostly without me/dad, as we usually go it alone and I am always the man with the camera...although occassionally we find a good stump for a self-timer.
with her paint and moccasins on!
I had seconds thoughts during this hunt, it seemed to steep and deep for her...but we were on a good trail and she thought it was COOL...
DAD, YOU ACTUALLY GOT ONE...NOW... WHAT IS IT?
Crane Prairie.... OH..IT'S SO HEAVY....she cheats!
I don't think I'm big enough to carry these...
Showing off at Crane AGAIN...(she didn't catch the ALL...give me a little credit)...
She packs her own stuff, in moccasins, and my feet were the one's hurting???
I thought she would be cautious around her first dead big game animal... Dad, take my picture!
She wanted to tag along at an early age. Kept the trips short, prayed for success to keep her interest...sometimes even a blind dad gets a nut!

Nice photos Tim. She's going to be a heartbreaker when she grows up.
Are you going to bring her along for the coyote hunt??

All three love to fish!
The middle daughter loves to hunt as well.
Train them right and they can do it themselves!

Re: Dads & Daughters in the Outdoors
My main hunting partners, Katie and Boomer at Deadwillow. Boomer is not quite sure what is happening but at 24 Katie is a seasoned veteran with over 10 seasons of hunting under her belt. Comfort first, however, note the propane heater at her feet...
And my cousin and niece on one of her first hunts. Trying to recruit new hunters is always fun.

Now if I could just find one just like that around my age(32) to marry I'd be set. Girls that are that good looking and like to hunt and fish seem to about nonexistent up here in the Sandy/PDX area. At least there is hope for my sons though since so many of you guys seem to be raising your daughters up right. I'll do my part to make sure my sons turn out to be respectful, upstanding, and responsible young gentlemen and hopefully they will meet a nice girl like the ones you all seem to be raising
