Re: Lewis River
After reading Bob's post I called Rob Nicolay at the NF lower hatchery and asked him what the activity was today up above Colvin Creek. He said that they were counting carcasses, and to make sure that they don't count the same fish twice they gaff the carcass and cut off the tail. I've watched them do this many times. He assured me that they would never gaff a live fish and that the "chromers" are really only bleached carcasses. If you have questions about the activities of hatchery personnel, never hesitate to call Rob for the facts. He is always happy to talk to fishermen. He can be reached at 360-225-2120.
For those of you with boats the fishing prospects are better than you might expect. Fin and I put in at the golf course in the wee hours this morning as the river was being dropped for carcass-counting. Despite the 900 CFS water level there was pretty fair fishing at the RV hole for the regulars there who were mostly flat-lining pink and orange wiggle warts, trolled quite fast upstream. Probably a couple of fish per boat. We also boondogged with Amerman eggs and hooked up with a few at Dan Ross' place and at the head of the pipe hole. Many bright fish are in. Yesterday was apparently a good day at the RV hole with limits pretty much assured, and two days ago the fishing was astounding, with reports of 20 or more fish per boat.
With the rain continuing this week and flows returning to 2,700 CFS tonight, I believe that boat-fishing, at least at the golf course/RV hole, will be good or better for the coming week.
