As a long time Mariner fan it was good to see them add a quality starter (28 years old) like Erik who has already proven himself in the American League. Hernandez and Bedard will make up a great 1-2 righty/lefty starting combo. It's always hard to give up promising young talent like Jones and Sherril but Baltimore is rebuilding and insisted on both of them. The M's past trading history hasn't been very good and here are a few that came back to haunt them:
- Tino Martinez and Jeff Nelson for Sterling Hitchcock and Russ "butterfingers" Davis.
- Dereck Lowe and Jason Veritek for Heathcliff Slocum.
- Jose Cruz Jr. for Paul Spoljaric and Mike Timlin
- Dave Henderson and Spike Owen for Rey Quinones and Mike Trujillo
- Letting Carlos Guillen, Omar Visquel, and Raul Ibanez walk as free agents. Wound up resigning Raul later at a much higher price.
Anyhow, spring training and spring fishing aren't very far off and can't come any too soon for this old coot!
