Layout Boat....Nu-Canoe
Did anyone see these at the Sportsman's Show??
Nu-Canoe, 12ft 80lb's..... interesting design w/ lots of configurations: waterfowl, fishing, recreation.
Small transom for an electric but talked to them about a small outboard and they seemed ok w/ a very small one, yet pointed out it was not rated for one. But also commented, "we do stick a big battery in them."
I still think the 4-Rivers is the best bet considering a motor.

Re: Layout Boat....Nu-Canoe
That looks pretty cool, but after looking at the price on one of the dealers websites I would buy a 4 rivers.
The price seems kind of steep.
What were they asking at the show?

Hunt n Fish,
Did you see that Rogers has the FA boats with layout camo cover and accessories delivered to your door for $1700? It's on their website. Last I heard they had about 30 boats left.

Re: Layout Boat....Nu-Canoe
Looks kinda neet, but I would be concerned about initial stabillity.
32-36" beam at waterline, 42" beam, seems a tad bit skinny.
Also the design is such that not much of the total length of the boat is close to the full beam width.
Aquapods are likely only 36-40" beam at the water line, but nearly 2/3 the length of the boat is very close to this beam. This Nu-Canoe looks to have only about 1/3 the lenght at or neer the maximum beam.

I agree, 12ft ~$1,100 fully rigged for waterfowl: boat, blind, w/ backrest seat.
But would you float the JohnDay in a 4-Rivers? Or take it camping and let the kids have fun with your 4-Rivers??? Don't think so. These things look like a kayak, but with more of a sportsman's twist thrown in. There is some value in thier "off season uses".
Nope.... it's not a substitute for a 4-Rivers, but still interesting.

If you use the dealers link yuo can get a few dealers sites with prices. Looks like they start at $800 for the basic and climb to $1300 pretty quick if you add anything.

John, of course! But...the FA Gunner is just too heavy for my needs.

Re: Layout Boat....Nu-Canoe
Lonnie you need not worry, I'm not jumping ship.
But you can't tell me you wouldn't look it over real carefully too. I'm only human.
It looks like it'd hold a couple bags and the dog w/ the blind down.

I gotta agree on this one. This boat looks to be a very good "High Lakes" fishing platform and a good summer play toy.

Re: Layout Boat....Nu-Canoe
I will admit that it looks like it would be easier to do some pond bass fishing out of, but for duck hunting only the 4 rivers seems more appropriate.
If you wanted it for dual purpose that may be the way to go, but like Lonnie said, I wouldn't haul many decoys in it.

Re: Layout Boat....Nu-Canoe
The boys and I looked at 'em tonight and they wanted $1100 ($1229 less 10% show special) for the 12' model outfitted with the hunting cover. 85lbs for the 12 footer was cool but the 10 footer only weighs 65

Re: Layout Boat....Nu-Canoe
You prolly know my thoughts on this. If your gonna spend that kind of dough on a boat, get a SOTAR I-K or an AIRE Superlynx. They are self- bailing, pack as baggage on airplanes, and are unsinkable. There was a guy along the N. wall selling some IK's with nice rigging, but thin, weak, material. SOTAR's are bomb proof, will not swamp, and do have multiple uses-class 5 to flatwater. I think they make one for dogs too.....

Not that I saw on their webpage.
I think we're comparing apples and oranges, now. The SOTAR's sure don't look like good layout boats to me.

Re: Layout Boat....Nu-Canoe

This is a SOTAR, and the yellow showing dissapears when I get in the boat.

This is Thumbar in a modified canoe. I was in my SOTAR that day at the Columbia, and we had pintail and mallards and geese(season closed) trying to land on top of us(well, maybe not the geese, but they were shooters).
Neither are as low profile as traditional layout boats, but they seem to work, and they do have year round uses. I would like to see them in a drab colors.
