Default Rogue River

Well, it is out of range but thought I would post none the less. The Upper Rogue River is fishing well for summer steelhead. I was there for the weekend fly-fishing below Shady Cove. I landed one and lost 4 others. Most of these fish are standard Rogue River 1-salt hatchery fish around 20" and 3-4 pounds. A lot of fun on trout rods. What was surprising was the aggressiveness of the Chinook. I hooked two in the 30-40 pound class. No contest for a 6 weight rod and 3x tippet. You just can't tire them out. I had one on for 20 minutes and another on for 30. Both of these fish were hooked in classic steelhead water and were not on or near redds. What a surprise! All in all our party had hook-ups throughout the day and several landed. We caught some nice trout too. All the fish were caught nymphing - including the salmon.

Did I fish with you? I was on the river on Saturday with a bunch of guys that I had never met before, save for one or maybe two - in catarafts. Sound familiar? I only managed to hook and loose one, but it was a great day and I learned a lot from my "guides".
